When crude-oil prices topped $40 a barrel—that was August 20, 2004—all the experts were sure it couldn’t stay that high.

But less than a year later it was higher still, hitting $50 a barrel on July 24, 2005. “Unsustainable,” said the experts. Then just six weeks later U.S. prices popped to $72 in response to Hurricane Katrina.
