How then, do we move backwards? How does a society, with most of the people having no clue of future events, move from being dependent on a vast and intertwined network of goods and services produced by the indigenous people of whereever, to a local resource and renewable energy based society, and do so in the timeframe available (20-30 years using the most liberal extimates, 10-20 with resonable estimates, 5-10 with worst case scenarios), all the while prices on everything increasing, world politics getting more militaristic, governments continuously reducing civil liberties, shortages of goods on the market and weather patterns resembling bad Hollywood movies?

Like rats from a sinking ship the contractors are the first to go.

I am sure some "moral issue" will become the focus of the nation by Jan 31st. There must be another feeding tube somewhere that can draw the undivided attention of the populous.

It's a strange world we live in indeed. With the Bush administration up is down , and down is up. If they get caught doing something wrong, they attack and say they didn't do it. When someone proves they did it, they attack and say it was right not wrong, regardless of law, evidence, or any other inconvenient facts. 29% of our population believes them regardless of what they do. They could decapitaite a baby in the middle of the state of the union address on national television, and the radical right would say they didn't do it. That's the kind of bizarre, Alice in Wonderland world we have right now.
The radical right suports them unquestioningly, the press is asleep at the switch, and the democrats... do they still exist? The Democrats for the most part are worthless stuffed suits who couldn't fight their way out of a wet paper bag. I changed my party affiliation (to the Greens) because I couldn't stand thinking of myself as a democrat any more.
So to expect Bush to see anything but roses during the state of the union is probably misguided. And the radical right will praise him for being such a great failure.

I've concluded that there isn't anything Bush has to say that I need to hear. Everything he says is 100% predictable. His positions, all of them bad ones, are set in concrete. Therefore nothing that comes out from between those thin, cold lips is newsworthy. The only development of mild interest to me will be the day he's sent to pasture. Of course, on that day he'll just be replaced by another piece of crap.

I think GG nailed it. Don't forget that the fourth estate is just a complicit in this mess. Everyone takes for granted that people only have a 30 second attention span, but hopefully that will start to change when things really get difficult. I remember not caring that Bush was elected President back in 2000 because he talked about energy initiatives (as well as all the same other stuff than Gore) on the run up to the presidency. He seemed to be an okay-dopey guy who listens to smart people - but with a business-bent. And his father was president to boot - so maybe Dad passed down some tips...
