i check the oil prices and part of me thinks, ooh, when will things change... I suppose I would like to see people look after the environment, and perhaps live a healthier life style. I just think, we consume a lot of junk.... the end of suburbia. sounds nice.
But when I think about it, a lot of people could die and that's a pretty bad thing to be looking forward to, especially since one of those people could be me. Also I dont think peak oil is really going to change the way people think.
I just enrolled in a bridging course to uni, and I think that one of the positive things about western society is the knowledge we have gained.

You could also die crossing the street or driving your car today.

No need to feel bad about it. I see it as a cleansing phase of sorts. The most physically fit, intelligent, resourceful will survive it, and a lot of people that exhibit bad traits, and who have been multiplying in the greatest number over the past 100 years, won't be making it.
The meaningful wisdom we've acquired should remain with us. Hopefully the crap that's come with it- cars, suburbia, etc. won't.

Think how many species will survive if human die-off will happen. Think how many are gone forever so another, and another, and another billion of people can live.

When the chance of being sued or imprisoned for dealing with assholes is non existent. A lot of assholes are going to have a life span of about 47 minutes . PS if your worried about being held accountable for your assholism , you should be.

I agree with you. Except....we're in our 3rd year post peak and people still buy Hummers, the bastards. Maybe the NEXT peak people will pay attention?

There are already thousands of people who lost their lives for the scarcity of oil. Do you think Irak families are simply stupid or unfit?
Or soldiers who might have thought they join the army because they didn't get another job?
I think intelligence an fitness or whatever might help to survive, but the big part is good luck. Being on the right place in a moment when a bomb's exploting.
And yes, Daniel It think too that there might be advantages, all the crazy lifestyle things, hazardous roads, disposable plastic cups comes to an end. But at what price??

Don't fool yourself at and immediately after the peak is the best time ever.
It's years after the peak the rear view, with renewables et el.. unable to keep up and constant contraction in the economy when things start getting interesting.

I wouldn't classify the Iraq war and all the needless and unfortunate deaths that have resulted from it as part of the PO dieoff.
Being in the army could be good strategy for surviving PO. They're bound to at least be fed while others are starving, lest they turn their guns on their rulers.
In any case, I didn't say that ALL people who are intelligent, resourceful and physically fit will survive. Rather, I meant that those who manage to survive will almost all have these three qualities.

What kind of intelligence are you referring to? Certain survival strategies that depend on intelligence work today that will not work tomorrow. The idea that the west is more intelligent, physically fit and resourceful is anathema to me because surely the wealthiest will have the best survival rates. Read "Guns Germs and Steel".
What are "bad traits"? The people who have been multiplying in the greatest number - you mean the impoverished people in Africa and India and trailer parks in Middle America?
