Imagine waking up and finding you were no longer a US citizen but one of the Vermont Republic.
As a Vermonter for over forty years I can tell you this is not symbolic. There has been an underlying sentiment for Vermont’s independence ever since I can remember. There has been detailed plans for the state’s flight from the Union in existence for several decades. I worked on some of them and if the there is popular support, which appears to be growing,
Vermont will and can, leave the Union.

I don't want my state of Massachusetts to be the battleground of a civil war.
But I'm all for letting California leave the union.

The People's Republic of Taxachusetts under the strong leadership of our Communist Ruling Party centered in Cambridge has managed to bring back great wealth in the form of Big Dig Subsidies. (14 billion+ and counting... ). The great part of the Big Dig is that we have 5 billion left in federal grant money...and we must spend it to keep it!
I'm not a big fan of the politics of my state, that's why I'm moving. Actually, everyone is moving. Mass. is the ONLY state in the nation to have lost population over the past 3 years. The brain drain is amazing. People come to MA for a great education...and then they move to New Hampshire because they're sick of living here.
Mass. is one of the most expensive places to live in the USA. New Hampshire, on the other hand, doesn't have an income tax. NH is also the location picked by the Free Staters as the state to invade.
