For a minute there I thought I had to get off my couch, when all the while the fact is we don't have to do anything much but keep things afloat for just a few decades more! In fact, we'd best shut up about PO, because if our offspring finds out we knew about it all along, they'll turn and wring our necks come 2036!

Jim Kunstler to speak at Secession Convention: link As an individual who long ago seceded from the Idiotocracy-I haven't paid one cent of income tax in over 20 years-I can only hope Montanans can get off the Federal Welfare tit, strap on a pair, and do what NEEDS to be done.
"another Montanan for secession."

It might be just symbolic, but this is the kind of thing we may see for real as fuel prices start tearing the country apart. _________________ In individuals, insanity is rare; but in groups, parties, nations, and epochs it is the rule. – Nietzsche

Some people in South Carolina are also making secessionist noises:
Quote:
Christian Exodus founder Burnell gave a PowerPoint presentation in which he said the organization's goal was to elect people like former Alabama state Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore, who was dismissed from office after he defied a federal court order to remove a Ten Commandments monument from a state court building.
Burnell was quoted recently by the Los Angeles Times as saying, "We're going to force a constitutional crisis. If necessary, we will secede from the union."
Charlotte Observer
These are still fringe movements, but if the divisions in the country continue to deepen, and the federal government becomes more oppressive and/or seen as ineffective to help out individual states in times of need, they may become more mainstream.

Texas has a secession clause in its constitution, but why exercise it when your boys are running the whole show?
I wonder if Austin can secede from Texas...
Or could the USA secede from Texas then?
Seriously though I find this all rather interesting, especially as Europe is going round with a broom trying to find countries to join in the game. _________________ "Complex problems have simple, easy to understand, wrong answers." - Henry Louis Mencken

I suppose they could give it back to the Mexicans.
That might cause some grave-rolling, though... _________________ "It's called the American Dream because you'd have to be asleep to believe it."

Weren't people from Texas originally called Texicans?
Then it could go back to being the lone-star state. _________________ "Complex problems have simple, easy to understand, wrong answers." - Henry Louis Mencken

When the proper time comes, that is, when the masses (those who have to WORK for a living) realize the Federal Govt has become an unaffordable nusiance, it will join the Soviet Govt, Western Roman Empire and others in the trash can of overextended, overregulated, self-absorbed, bureaucratic, irrelevant, parasitic, incompetent, soul-withering, outmoded.......

I don't think they were called Texicans, but I don't know for sure. _________________ "It's called the American Dream because you'd have to be asleep to believe it."

Imagine waking up and finding you were no longer a US citizen but one of the Vermont Republic.
As a Vermonter for over forty years I can tell you this is not symbolic. There has been an underlying sentiment for Vermont’s independence ever since I can remember. There has been detailed plans for the state’s flight from the Union in existence for several decades. I worked on some of them and if the there is popular support, which appears to be growing,
Vermont will and can, leave the Union.

Let's just hope Maine and NH don't join them...
I don't want my state of Massachusetts to be the battleground of a civil war.
But I'm all for letting California leave the union.
It would be nice to get rid of those 2 Communist Senators and those 54 irrating blue electors... _________________ "www.peakoil.com is the Myspace of the Apocalypse."

This little thing called "history" disagrees with you.
You remember what happened last time a couple states tried to succede right?
That war wasnt fought over slave rights, as much as some would like to think that. _________________ "Battle not with monsters, lest ye become a monster, and if you gaze into the

Massachusetts isnt exactly a bastion of Constitutional freedoms........ _________________ "Battle not with monsters, lest ye become a monster, and if you gaze into the

The People's Republic of Taxachusetts under the strong leadership of our Communist Ruling Party centered in Cambridge has managed to bring back great wealth in the form of Big Dig Subsidies. (14 billion+ and counting... ). The great part of the Big Dig is that we have 5 billion left in federal grant money...and we must spend it to keep it!
I'm not a big fan of the politics of my state, that's why I'm moving. Actually, everyone is moving. Mass. is the ONLY state in the nation to have lost population over the past 3 years. The brain drain is amazing. People come to MA for a great education...and then they move to New Hampshire because they're sick of living here.
Mass. is one of the most expensive places to live in the USA. New Hampshire, on the other hand, doesn't have an income tax. NH is also the location picked by the Free Staters as the state to invade. We might end up with a Libertarian Congressman up there if the plan succeeds. _________________ "www.peakoil.com is the Myspace of the Apocalypse."
