Meanwhile, keep watching for shortage reports, because we should start seeing some sneak in this week, if our doom-o-meter is calibrated correctly.

Very cool, talks a lot about some specific things they do to maintain their off grid farm. Inspiring. The 5 May 2008 post about the water coming back, and their food production methods, is awesome. Also check out the "Basic green practices in the little house" list on the right of the page.

That is some fine material.

Thanks for that link, Shanny. I've bookmarked it and will be spending some time reading through the posts - looks like great information.

Great link Shanny! Sounded some like our old place, badly treated for 100 years, but we did get it healed up a lot before we had to sell it. (Major personal losses intervened, or we'd still be there.)

We managed to greatly improve the forest in 12 years, by only minimal selective cutting. Got the old hilsides partly terraced and grassed, a couple major washout gullies dammed and filled in, and the main creek under control with ponds and sodded banks, wider bottoms, and a bridge/dam to control massive runoff in spring. Wasteland when we bought it, "farmed out", the locals called it, but producing timber, pasture, water, wildlife, and crops when we sold, and getting better all the time. The new owner is an art teacher and a math teacher, fine people, but utterly clueless about how to treat land. Luckily, they only want a residence and a place for pet horses, so they aren't hurting much.

Bittersweet memories. I can vouch for the approach, made it work ourselves for a time.

Thanks, interesting read, but as a farmer myself I'm struck by the lack of specifics in the orcharding post.

Profound claims are one thing. Itemized, documented results are another.
