I think it's the wrong message to send to the countries closest to it that it's going to depend on more and more as US influence in the world diminishes in relative and even absolute terms in the next generation. The US is already the undisputed regional power of the hemisphere. Even Brazil is at best going to be just its partner for the foreseeable future. If this is predicated on simply showing the flag to others, that's one thing. If it's about leaning on other Americans (in the original and actual sense of the word), it's like trying to convince your neighbours you're their pal by aiming your rifle at their pets while your talk about the weather over the fence.

More likely is that it's designed to lean on Venezuela. Frankly, I find all the posturing between Venezuela and the US to be silly.
