State has seen strong shift, with wind power gaining acceptance
By Peter Slevin
Quote:
When Colorado voters were deciding whether to require that 10 percent of the state's electricity come from renewable fuels, the state's largest utility fought the proposal, warning that any shift from coal and natural gas would be costly, uncertain and unwise. …
In Colorado -- a state historically known for natural gas and fights over drilling -- wind and solar power are fast becoming prominent parts of the energy mix. Wind capacity has quadrupled in the past 18 months, according to Gov. Bill Ritter (D), and Xcel has become the largest provider of wind power in the nation. ...

A Change in perception

Colorado is a wonderful place. If it wasn't for the short growing season I would move back there today. In fact, if NREL is hiring, I will be applying!

So they have voted twice to require renewables to be a large part of their electricity production. I really can see them allowing the western half of the state to be dug up to produce oil shale!!

Sorry Vampyregirl Very Happy

I shudder at the thought of our wilderness areas being dug up so people can continue to drive 1 mile to the grocery store, 2 miles to work, or get in and drive one block to the liquor store.

It's a good thing wind energy is looking a lot more viable as fossil fuels continue to become more expensive.

Electricity is fantastic because it can power EVERYTHING. Not only that, just like liquid fuels, all you have to do is conserve to see real $ savings.
