I think this is the beginnings of an economy based on perpetual growth and fossil fuel energy running headlong into geological energy constraints. Basically I see an undulatory downward path for the rest of my life. From here out, I think any rallies in our economic condition are going to be met with spiking commodity prices that knock us right back down.

Oil companies evacuate Gulf workers as Gustav looms
Quote:
British oil group BP and US rivals ConocoPhillips and Shell on Thursday evacuated workers from their energy installations in the Gulf of Mexico as Tropical Storm Gustav loomed.
"We're completing the evacuation of non-essential personnel from offshore platforms," BP said in an automated phone message. "Production is not impacted by the storm."

I would suspect that Gustav will strengthen to a Cat4 by the time it hits the coast.
Something that is more interesting to me is the charts here,
http://www.rigzone.com/news/hurricanes/gustav.asp ,
showing the average oil and gas productions. Look at the trend for each. _________________ Gravity is not a force, it is a boundary layer.

Maybe we'll get to see more funny looter pictures, too. The Black man with the case of stolen beer has become an American icon. And who could forget the pictures of the Black cops stealing plasma TVs and boom boxes from that department store? Maybe there'll be some more entertaining news stories from the Superdome. Doubtless another song will be written about 'Hood Warlords shooting at the rescue helicopters. And, of course, FEMA will want to give another six or seven of those $2000 credit vouchers to each of the "victims" and compensate them for the loss of their "mansions" (which, of course, will have been entirely blown away by the strong winds--that's why it ain't there no more).

I've read quite a few posts & you are so racist & ignorant, I don't know why you are still allowed to post here. It's even more scary that you are allowed to own a gun!

Oh the hype. Guessing where Gustav is going to land is like guessing where a spinning top is going to fall off the table. But the experts are trying and they has us watching our favorite 24 hour news source. It's as exciting as watching that slow speed chase with that certain white Bronco.
However, seeing the map of all the oil rigs, nothing like putting all the eggs in one basket! Are we really that stupid???? _________________ We are so screwed.

I'm not so concerned about individual production platforms as much as I am concerned about pipeline platforms. One of those goes out, you lose the production of several platforms. For instance almost 25% of GoM oil and gas flows through West Delta 143. That one platform goes down and you loose alot of GoM production. The tracks I have seen does put Gustav in the West Delta block. Something to watch. _________________ Nothing is more dangerous than a man with nothing left to lose but has everything left to gain.

"Gradual" strengthening is forecast, and Hanna could be near hurricane strength on Sunday, the center said.

If these refinery shutdowns last more than a few days, we are facing the prospect of widespread gasoline shortages in the Gulf/Midwest in one week.

Gustav Cuts U.S. Oil Imports, Gas Supply, Refinery Operations
By Jim Polson
Aug. 30 (Bloomberg) -- Crude-oil and natural-gas shipments from the Gulf of Mexico were curtailed and Valero Energy Corp., the largest U.S. refining company, cut production as Hurricane Gustav strengthened on a path to strike Louisiana within two days.
Evacuations closed the Louisiana Offshore Oil Port, the nation's largest crude oil terminal, and cut flows from offshore platforms into the 10,500-mile (16,900-kilometer) gas pipeline to the U.S. northeast owned by Williams Cos. Enbridge Energy Partners LP closed gas conduits out of the Gulf. Oil producers shut more output, down 6.6 percent yesterday, according to U.S. government figures.
Marathon Oil Corp., the fourth-largest U.S. oil company, said it shut production at both its Gulf platforms, as Royal Dutch Shell Plc and BP Plc raced to cut production of 800,000 barrels a day of oil by day's end. Enbridge Energy Partners LP began shutting off Gulf lines capable of bringing in 6.7 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas. Louisiana's petrochemical- producing parishes ordered residents to leave, adding that return routes will be blocked and curfews imposed by nightfall.
``Devastating storm-surge flooding'' is possible, officials in St. Charles Parish, home to three oil refineries, said in a statement. Officials urged residents to leave before a planned mandatory evacuation at noon, local time, saying Gustav may be strong enough to breach levees protecting the parish just west of New Orleans.

Tropical Storm Gustav Activity Statistics Update – August 30, 2008
Minerals Management Service monitors activities through its Continuity of Operations Plan.
NEW ORLEANS — Offshore oil and gas operators in the Gulf of Mexico are evacuating platforms and rigs in the path of Hurricane Gustav. The Minerals Management Service has activated its Continuity of Operations Plan team to monitor the operators’ activities. This team will be activated until operations return to normal and the storm is no longer a threat to the Gulf of Mexico oil and gas activities.
Based on data from offshore operator reports submitted as of 11:30 a.m. CST today, personnel have been evacuated from a total of 223 production platforms, equivalent to 31.1 % of the 717 manned platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. Production platforms are the structures located offshore from which oil and natural gas are produced. These structures remain in the same location throughout a project’s duration unlike drilling rigs which typically move from location to location.
Personnel from 45 rigs have also been evacuated; this is equivalent to 37.2 % of the 121 rigs currently operating in the Gulf. Rigs can include several types of self-contained offshore drilling facilities including jackups, submersibles and semisubmersibles.
From the operators’ reports, it is estimated that approximately 76.77 % of the oil production in the Gulf has been shut-in. Estimated current oil production from the Gulf of Mexico is 1.3 million barrels of oil per day. It is also estimated that approximately 37.16 % of the natural gas production in the Gulf has been shut-in. As of June 2008, estimated current natural gas production from the Gulf of Mexico was 7.0 billion cubic feet of gas per day. Since that time, gas production from the Independence Hub facility has increased and current gas production from the Gulf is estimated at 7.4 billion cubic feet of gas per day.

Did they not do this with Katrina? My cousin's husband works for Exxon, and they were all evacuated to Houston the day before Katrina hit. _________________ Conservation is conservative
