I think this is the beginnings of an economy based on perpetual growth and fossil fuel energy running headlong into geological energy constraints. Basically I see an undulatory downward path for the rest of my life. From here out, I think any rallies in our economic condition are going to be met with spiking commodity prices that knock us right back down.

I've been reading some of the news articles found on the peakoil.com home page and have notice a lot of them pertain to global warming and the "falling apart" of emission bans and such. I think this issue needs to be adressed more as it will lead to a much worse cataclysm than peak oil!

Here are some of the articles I am referring to...

"Global warming likely to hit Africa hard"
http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2005-05/17/content_2967636.htm

"Climate change policy in tatters"
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk_news/story/0,3604,1484894,00.html

This is what I've been thinking will happen for a while.

A lot of people only care about the environment only up until the point where it has to impact their lives in any way, shape, or form. Example, they'll talk about how people need to consrve but given the option to by compact fluorescent lightbulbs for three times the price (though they last 10x longer...) they will decline. Aka, most all of my friends Sad .

Many more are willing to make certain sacrifices, but not to any great extent. Example, me: I bike to work and use energy-efficient appliances, but have not given up new clothes once or twice a year, eating meat, running a fairly powerful computer, etc., etc.

Finally, almost nobody is willing to drastically cut energy usage for the environment (e.g., someone like Ran Prieur). Ergo, as the oil runs out, we'll go back to coal (Fischer-Tropsch, whatever), global warming be damned.

edit: Examples, etc.

Ah, but they will, willing or not.

I think the most likely thing to do is to assume that every bit of burnable carbon on the planet will end up in the atmosphere, and take appropriate action and precaution.

This is one of the most drastic articles that I've ever read:

The Turtle agrees that PO will open up entire new possibilities for intensified rape of the planet, but wonders what exactly consitutes appropriate action and precaution? Crying or Very sad

Think about it...PO and global warming...

If you keep burning fossile fuels you're doomed...if you decline in fossile fuel burning, you're doomed!

Smile

Only GOD could have devised such a perfect and pure plan! (not that i'm looking forward to it mind you...but wow...could YOU have come up with a plan so utterly comprehensive)???

Come on, are you realy buying into the mainstream medias output and believe that there are some "terrorist groups" out there that are capable to challenge the system?

Apparently if someone were to blow up a port (I can't remember the name) then it could cause a bit of chaos as alot of oil goes through this one port every day (sorry can't remember the name of the port).

Anyway yes the environment is going to hell but capitalism doesn't care one bit and Laura the tart next door doesn't care either.

China warns of danger of melting Everest glaciers

BEIJING (Reuters) - Global warming is shrinking glaciers on the Tibet side of Mount Everest faster than ever, putting world water supplies at risk, Xinhua news agency said on Tuesday...

.."Global warming has resulted in glaciers melting fast in the Mount Qomolangma area ... threatening the balance of global water resources," it said...

.."The growing melting area means less fresh water reserves for the world in the future," Xinhua said...

In a recent Harpers header there was the obscure news that Australia might never see rain again ever....

I was not able to search the particular article but it's a great publication no matter what.

Any dedicated group of men with enough explosives could slow the hell out of oil flow. The first time would be easy. For example, one drunk with a rifle shut down the Alaska pipeline for 3 days. An RV full of explosives on the Yukon river bridge would stop flow for at least a year (that statement will probably make life more difficult for the tourists coming to Alaska this year). That is 5 per cent of our production right there.
Or are you buying into the belief that violence never accomplishes anything? It may not accomplish anything productive, but it sure as hell makes a noise.
Now if only Osama would have flown a plane into the capitol building---during a full joint session -- naa, I'm dreaming about a Tom Clancy book again.

What's the rush, Hawk? Peak oil is going to take care of all that by itself, and it's pretty certain we're peaking right now. The federal government's going to perish in the die off while I eat my MREs.

Humans are destroying the enviroment, but its hard not to with so many of us on this planet. Heres a new article about the Dead Sea and how its going empty

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7902962/

this part was painful to read
Quote:
The Dead Sea covers about 250 square miles in a deep valley bordered by Israel, Jordan and the West Bank. But to understand why the sea is dying, begin about 60 miles north, at a spot just below the Sea of Galilee that today is the northernmost source of water for the lower Jordan River -- an open drain that pumps out 720,000 gallons of raw sewage a day.

White foam flutters in small pools around rocks. Chunks of concrete, strips of plastic piping, bicycle tires and other litter clutter the shore. The stench of human waste fills the air. If the scene is not cautionary enough, a sign warns: "Danger! Don't enter or drink the water."

I've fished, camper, explored the Mississippi River my whole life and to see people abusing a river like this makes me sick. The big problem the Mississippi has is runoff from agriculture (too much N).

Once humans are gone its going to take awhile before Earth is right again.
