This is what I've been thinking will happen for a while.
A lot of people only care about the environment only up until the point where it has to impact their lives in any way, shape, or form. Example, they'll talk about how people need to consrve but given the option to by compact fluorescent lightbulbs for three times the price (though they last 10x longer...) they will decline. Aka, most all of my friends  .
Many more are willing to make certain sacrifices, but not to any great extent. Example, me: I bike to work and use energy-efficient appliances, but have not given up new clothes once or twice a year, eating meat, running a fairly powerful computer, etc., etc.
Finally, almost nobody is willing to drastically cut energy usage for the environment (e.g., someone like Ran Prieur). Ergo, as the oil runs out, we'll go back to coal (Fischer-Tropsch, whatever), global warming be damned.

Ah, but they will, willing or not.
I think the most likely thing to do is to assume that every bit of burnable carbon on the planet will end up in the atmosphere, and take appropriate action and precaution.

The Turtle agrees that PO will open up entire new possibilities for intensified rape of the planet, but wonders what exactly consitutes appropriate action and precaution?  |

If you keep burning fossile fuels you're doomed...if you decline in fossile fuel burning, you're doomed!
Only GOD could have devised such a perfect and pure plan! (not that i'm looking forward to it mind you...but wow...could YOU have come up with a plan so utterly comprehensive)??? |

Apparently if someone were to blow up a port (I can't remember the name) then it could cause a bit of chaos as alot of oil goes through this one port every day (sorry can't remember the name of the port).
Anyway yes the environment is going to hell but capitalism doesn't care one bit and Laura the tart next door doesn't care either. |

In a recent Harpers header there was the obscure news that Australia might never see rain again ever....

I've fished, camper, explored the Mississippi River my whole life and to see people abusing a river like this makes me sick. The big problem the Mississippi has is runoff from agriculture (too much N).
Once humans are gone its going to take awhile before Earth is right again. |
