"Peak Oil- imposed by Nature" is already available now (it was originally scheduled to be released not before mid August).

Yes. I'd give it 3/5.
On the negative side, some of the production is naff (such as walking up to a car and seeing the economist wind his window down and saying "Hello" - very amateur looking). The "Dick Cheney - Dick Cheney - Dick Cheney" effect was off-putting. And the film feels like it ends suddenly.
Also there is no mention of Hubbert, although I guess it's not so necessary since the discovery and production profiles of a number of countries is shown. What I would have liked to have seen was the statement made by Simmons in "End of Suburbia" where he points out how Hubbert's detractors kept saying "we're producing more than ever", considering there are now people around saying the same thing about global production in the same vein.
I also think it would have been better if there was more of Colin Campbell's material that he uses in presentations.
I think a big plus point is gained by having an economist on board, describing how PO impacts on the markets, and that the same signals are appearing as other commodities that become short in supply. Also, since the film is shorter than "End Of Suburbia" it may serve as a quicker introduction from a group of experts.
In summary, it's a good, short introduction to the issues, with emphasis on the financial domain. It just could have been better. _________________ The Olduvai Theory is thinkable http://www.dieoff.com/page224.pdf

I would give this 0/5.
In my opinion the main purpose for Peak Oil DVDs should be to introduce people to peak oil. I wouldn't dare show this to anyone, not even those who have some idea about peak oil because it so poorly done.
It starts with the whole CIA visited Colin Campbell angle but says NOTHING about the actual visit itself. Mike Ruppert comes briefly on camera to boast of his brushes with the CIA and that it obviously means that Colin is "on to something". Now whatever you may think of Ruppert, his style (especially for those who aren't familiar with him) downgrades the opening minutes of the documentary to a "CIA is hiding UFOs from us" type amateur production. This is going to taint whatever the doco subsequently puts forward for MOST people new to peak oil.
But what follows is barely any better. The disjointed interviews provide little depth or understanding of exactly what is being talked about other than oil prices are likely to keep climbing and that oil won't last forever. It certainly wouldn't inspire anyone to investigate things further themselves.
The doco runs for ONLY 28.5 minutes and fills a fair bit of that with badly chosen footage. Whether that be Colin Campbell sorting through his firewood to cary into his wood heater or playing his accordion. It is simply wasted space with no commentary or explanation.
My major gripes are:
- does not satisfactorily explain peak oil
- explains nothing about the "serious consequences for mankind"
- no mention of alternatives and why they can't replace oil
- no explanation of what oil is used for (agriculture, plastics, manufacturing, etc).
This definitely does more HARM than good to any attempt to increase the general awareness of peak oil.
Don't waste your money.
I have both 'The End of Suburbia' and 'Arithmetic, Population and Energy" by Dr Albert Bartlett on DVD and strongly recommend both of these instead. |

I agree with the above poster, don't waste your money. This film is a total dissapointment and makes peak oilers look like a bunch of drooling doofuses.
The film is disjointed, and does not move smoothly from one point to another.
The film appears to have been created by my 5 year grandson. Actually, he does a better job holding the camera.
There is a part in the film where Colin Campbell is describing the life cycle of limpits. First of all, what's a limpit? I don't even know how to spell it.
The story of the demise of the more advanced limpits may have a link to peak oil. But, I felt it was so stupid, and did not connect well. But, then nothing else connected either.
The interview portion of the film was done in a moving car with the sound of the wind rushing by.
Who thought this up? The coneheads?
As far as I am concerned this film is a step backward in creating awareness of peak oil.
I am going to be teaching an oil class this fall, and I would never show or reccomend this film.

I don't like it much either.
It might supplement "End of Suburbia," but it doesn't come close to it in impact or production values.
Very disappointing, I really, really HATE saying that. _________________ "By the time individuals discover that remaining resources will not be adequate for the next generation, the next generation has already been born. " David Price |

Hi,
I agree with the last few posters. I have seen it twice, once in company with a Peak Oil Group, and instead of applauding there was dead silence.
The worst fault is the "conspiracy theory" stuff, which IMHO makes Colin look like a crank.
I don't think it should be shown to anybody: PO people will be disappointed and sceptics will just have their prejudices confirmed. |

You guys ripped that movie apart like buchers. It must be redundant piece of disinformation done by a dilettante.

Hey, I'm not lazy. I searched for several different permutations of the title, and it did not come up.
I wonder why not?
I'm really not too happy with our search engine... |
