Hoarding is exactly what the government is doing right now by filling the SPR, and frankly it's the best thing that could happen. It drives prices up. High prices encourage demand destruction. They also finance new well development. The hoarded oil gives us a buffer to fall back on once shortages become more prevalent. High prices are what we need in order to adapt to what's coming, and the sooner they happen, the better.
When our civilization falls, we will be on our own. We will need to defend ourselves. And we will need weapons. It is important to join a group where you can stick together and scavenge for food and shelter together. With enough men, you can watch for enemies during all times of the day. I am a member off such a group, and my chances are therfore improved.
You should stock up on guns and ammunition. That is without question. You will need them. The savages will be looting and burning anything that moves, and they must not come near you. A skilled sniper should be placed in a lookout tower so enemies can be shot from a distance. If that is not enough, every man, woman, and child should be trained in marksmanship.
Eventually, the maurauding bands will die out when there is nothing left to pillage. Hopefully your ammunition will hold out till then. If it doesn't, you are as good as dead. But if it does, you will have the heavy task of reconquering civilization from the barbarians. Stock up swords and spears, bows and arrows, shields and armor. When the bullets are gone, it is back to old-style combat. Like the Roman legions of old, it is your duty to storm out of your stronghold, and subdue the sorrounding lands. Fallen cities will be a source of war materials from which you can found a new empire, a strong empire. One that will have learned from the past and will never fail again.

I plan to learn the art of deadly disc throwing. I will utilize my collection of CD and transform them to deadly weapons. I can already slice an apple from 5 meters with standard CD!
My malfunctioning cd-drive will be transformed to crowd-suppressing automatic gun. It can hurl discs with extra sharp edge spinning at over 10 000 RPM!!
Secret labs of my survivalistic group also work on high-tech post peak weapons. Electro-shock weapons made from old electronics .. just take the transformer, let 3 bikers charge high-voltage capacitor from TV with it, and you have nice deadly weapon .. tell the bandits to hold their hands and you can eliminate many at once!! We also plan to utilize electron-gun from CRT monitors and TV as an ion gun! Unfortunatelly, all prototypes are failing in non-vacuum conditions, and all availiable home TV and monitors were destroyed in tests
But of course, high-tech is only one way to go. Bio-section already works on breeding super-deadly aligators for mud ditch. Subjects are responding good to anabolic steroides, but unfortunatelly, due to low temperatures, sleep for most of the day and all night

First I shock em with some really harsh language... then while they are vulnerable, I hypnotism em. Then, while they are doing circles and barking like a dog, I move in with my kung fu. (Been studying Kill Bill & think I have it down).
Now the kung fu might not work, cause I still can't do a proper back flip. In this case I'll fall back on my mini trebuchet. It won't kill anything, but it leaves a nasty mark, which would be very embarrassing to any attackers.

Music will be the ultimate weapon of the future.
I'm talkin' bout blasting stuff like Led Zeppelin, Metallica, AC/DC and Aerosmith.
It will strike fear and confusion into the hearts of the savage beasts. Unfortunately, the availability of the weapon might depend on the working stereos and CDs that are left.
Music like Brittany Spears, and Hillary Duff with be the A-bombs of the future, that will render foes helpless and sick with nausea. Unlike the alternative rock, you'd have to have ear plugs for this.
And possibly a raincoat, because the force from the decibels and the horrible music, might explode the listener's brains all over you.
