Is there any congressman who believe in free market. Chinese money is welcome as long as they buy worthless IOUs.
Congress to shoot down unwanted bidders

What is next, they will ask to expropriate any foreigner who owns asset in the US.

This is the kind of the stuff that I expect from Chinese Communist party, not from the "Leader of the Free World" and "Champion of Democracy".

Does US congress wants empty shelves in all Wal Mart? It would probably have an impact on consumer confidence.

I would very much like to see empty shelves in all WalMarts Very Happy

Seriously: there is a very thin line between politics and economy. Fact is the U.S. is very much dependent on foreign investments. Since the Chinese economy is booming, the U.S. government should really promote foreign investments on their own soil in stead of making it less attractive.

My guess the reason why the congressmen were so adamantly opposed to the Unocal deal perhaps had to do with their patents on reformulated gasoline. Otherwise, I think the tactic could backfire big time when it comes to financing the treasury where the US is totally dependent upon the Chinese.

The same thing happened back in the 80's when the Japanese were buying up all the US real estate (eg, Rockefeller Center in NYC). I think it's alarmist.

But on the flip side, the US (imo) realizes there is a significant problem with securing oil in the future when you have an entire economy based upon one primary energy source.

This is just another act of desperation, as is the US entering into unprecedented act of aggression against sovereign nations. Unfortunately, corporations look no further than their next quarterly earnings reports, and politicians look no further than their next re-election.

I really think it has very little to do with oil reserves.

The thing is, that Unocal is very, very cozy with president Bush. The president of Afghanistan was formerly a Unocal employee(just to show you how cozy they are).

If Unocal profits, Bush profits. If Unocal gets bought for an astronomical inflated price, Bush gets lots, and lots of money.

Essentially, this is the Chinese way of offering Bush a bribe. They say "hey, we want X, Y, Z favors done, in exchange, we will pay you huge, huge sums of money, all you have to do is screw your country on these various trade policies". Now, it's understandable that China would do that, and that Bush would accept such an offer. However, many people do not like the idea of the U.S president being bribed, and so they staunchly attack this proposal.

They can't use the arguement "Hey, this is just one big bribe", because obviously the American people are so dumb, that even though Bush repeatidly lied to them, and has been proven a liar, and his father repeatidly lied to them, they continue to follow Bush. If somebody says "Hey, Bush is a crook", and tries to reveal what's going on, they will only get support from the democrats. However, if they say "this could hurt our oil reserves", then that garners support from the conservatives. It does hurt U.S oil reserves, barley, but it does.

The main reason remains however, that it's just one big bribe.

Man I dislike politics.
