It occurred to me after recent tragedies that I was in need of a BOB (Bug-Out-Bag). Probably long overdue in fact. I’ve given it some thought but was wondering maybe what others think the Ultimate BOB ought to consist of?
I have a (14) Hr. trek to make by auto from where I live to get to my farm in the country and that’s with good roads and plenty of gas stations in between. So my needs may be a bit different from others. However such a security kit, I would think, needs to be something you can pick up and run with that would include both urban and cross country survival gear.
Let me know what you think I should stash?

Just as a start, I'd have enough fuel to go from your current location to the farm without having to stop to refuel along the way. I guess I'd also be looking at all the possible routes, and be trying to figure out which ones would be the least used by other people. |

Check out Patrolling with Sean Kennedy. He's a bit strange but he has a lot of useful tips about putting together your kit.

If it’s a one day trek then the only target is to “make it there” assuming that the farm has all you need, I would include.
-The farm keys!
-Water, lots of it. It’s probably the most important thing (is better to carry 10 extra liters and don’t use them than lacking 1 liter), a water purifier (iodine) or one of those expensive portable water filters, but I would prefer iodine.
-Food for the journey, twice the amount you think you’ll need or more. Don’t forget the can opener if you need it. And eat sweet and carbohydrates before leaving.
-If you go by car load a bicycle inside just in case, is better to pedal 300 miles than walk.
-A loaded gun and ammunition and any papers you may need for carrying it.
-Some sort of ID
-Something to protect you from the rain in case you have to walk, if it’s a very hot place then carry an umbrella to protect you from the sun, it looks dumb but works perfect.
-1 set of clothes and a small towel wrapped on a plastic bag.
-Money (divide the total amount and hide it in several places like shoes, money belt etc..) keep some in your pocket too.
-Map and a compass in case you get lost.
-Pocket knife
-Flashlight and lots of batteries
-Mobile phone if you have one and address book.
-A lighter
-Mosquito repellent
-Toilet paper, tooth brush, toothpaste and soap tablet.
-Painkillers and any other pill / medicine you may need.
-A watch with an alarm.
-A small radio to listen the news during breaks.
Other things to keep in mind:
-Have a story ready. Just in case you have to explain someone where are you going or what are you doing, think what you want them to hear.
-Focus on the objective. Since it is arriving to point B don’t carry any extra thing that is not totally necessary for accomplishing the objective, like music players, books, instruments etc. Any valuable item that you carry may become an object of desire by strangers.
-Keep a low profile in clothes and gear (no sexy stuff if you are a woman, if you are a man shave. In any case look like a respectable average person)
-The smallest the back pack the better, also is very good if you use one that looks like a piece of crap instead of one that screams high tech.

Thanks, that was a great larf.
Sean looks lke the typical survivalist who's read too many comics and
stuffed himself with with patriot fries while doing so:
1. Sean should lose about 20lbs to gain a shred of credibility. Zombies
can run but Sean can't. Can he see his genitals without a mirror?
2. The haircut is a nice marines no.2. Luckily that took no effort.
3. I hope he has a spare set of specs for TEOTWAWKI. He'll lose
them in the first knife fight.
4. I like the pressed cammies. I hope he keeps an iron in the
bug out bag.
5. He has the biceps of a nintendo addict. Credibility there...
Sean clearly spends too much time looking at gear catalogues than
on push ups and 10 mile runs.
Does he sell bridges too? |

Another good laugh!
I'm always amazed by survivalists choices and how unrealistic they
are:
1. They always seem to include some fishing gear. Hooks are a hopeless
way to really catch fish. While fun for recreation it is unbelievably inefficient. You need to be in a place where fish are. Much of the US is an eco disaster.. If there are fish do you really want to eat them? In fishing u lose gear all the time. 6 hooks and some sinkers will be gone in a few
days max lost on snags. A net is the best way but bulky and heavy.
Needs repairs and preferably 2 people. Throw nets are good but have
lead weights. Again, i'd worry about toxins.
2. Sitting on a bank fishing during the supposed TEOTWAWKI is kinda
not in the spirit of it all. Kinda exposed. Kinda vulnerable.
3. Leaving a line in will probably give u away and /or lose your tackle.
4. The second pack had more firepower than the pentagon. A pistol
with different barrels and ammo + 22 cal pistol + slingshot too. 4
radios!! And the cracker.....toiletpaper!!! Yep, gotta avoid that
sticky feeling with hairy arse cheeks. Surely a squirt of water and
some leaves is the go for the serious.
My recommendation: spend 2 weeks living this crap and then when
u realise how tough it is, write letters and be active in changing
society so you don't have to do it for real! A leech on the end of your
dick can really make your day. |

Be sure that you have auto repair stuff, fuses, fix-a-flat, cables, tire chains, radiator hose patch, etc. I just leave a tub in the trunk of the car or in under the back seat of the pick-up.
