Spec, you anywhere near a Walmart? They sell the blue 5 gallon water containers for about 6 bucks each. I have 5 of them so far. Of course, they are not doing me any good because they are in my closet empty Embarassed

What about the camping section at your local retailer? They should have those sturdy 3-gallon water containers that are not too expensive. I like those becuase they are thin and easier to carry than the 5-gallons.

Preperation: Yesterday I purchased 10 more packages of freeze dried meals that have a shelf life of about 5 years. I'm working on a one year supply of food for my daughter and I. I'm assuming I will never need this stuff so I 'justify' it by calling it the worlds biggest earthquake kit! Fast hard crash scenario though - A one year supply would give me enough time to get a garden up and running. Of course, I don't have a yard or a water supply. Crying or Very sad

Pops, Welcome to the midwest! Does this mean you're in Kansas though? Aww. They'll never get you back to the city though. I wouldn't trade this country life for anything. Keep us posted.

We are going to be installing rain catch barrels as well. But, how do you keep the mosquitos from making a home in them? Do you keep them sealed with a lid...is there something that can be added to the water, but will still make it drinkable?

Oh, and those big water jugs at Walmart. Mine has them in the camping section. Couple different brands.

Actually my wife and I both grew up in the country but then the city came to us! I hadn’t seen the Milky Way since I was a kid without being 5,000 ft in the Sierras – yes, this is a fine place.

JackBob I haven’t felt as truly free in my entire life as I did when I held that deed in my hands! I assume it would be the same if I owned a hovel outright – no one can put you on the street.

My wife and I have 11 acres. We are 100 miles from any large cities. WE have a well that we can pull water from. We heat with wood. We can,dry and freeze over 1000 containers a year. We have 2 ponds that are stocked with fish. We are self employed and have no debt. This is not a surival life style it took us 30 years to get to this point in our lives. The hardest thing we have had to learn is to seperate our wants and our needs.If society stops tomorrow so be it we will go on if they they find all the oil that is needed that is okay to our lives will stay the same. Even though it has taken a long time to get to this point in our lives we did it because this is the choice we made on how we wanted to live.

Went to town and found a bench mount, hand crank grinder (the tool sharpening kind) in an antique store for $10. A nice ‘50s or ’60 cast iron job.

There was a good hand brace drill I may get next trip.

I need to start getting the local paper to check out the auctions…

Pops, look for farm auctions in your area. You cant believe what you can find at a farm auction, and dirt cheap as well.
Farm auctions are the diamonds in the rough of finding good things!

Last night I stocked water under my bed, I took 100 bottles of bottled water, each is 500ml, half a liter each, and stacked it under my bed. I have 50 liters of clean drinking water, in case from where I live, there's a major earthquake.
