Hoarding is exactly what the government is doing right now by filling the SPR, and frankly it's the best thing that could happen. It drives prices up. High prices encourage demand destruction. They also finance new well development. The hoarded oil gives us a buffer to fall back on once shortages become more prevalent. High prices are what we need in order to adapt to what's coming, and the sooner they happen, the better.

Quote:
The title of the post should be gasoline price gouging--not oil price. Strictly speaking, reducing the number of refineries would cause oil prices to go down, not up.

Given the cost and complexity of environmental litigation in this country, companies think long and hard about building new refineries. The logical extension of that is that companies think long and hard about keeping refineries open, especially in areas like California. Having said that, are oil companies interested in maximizing profits? News bulletin: yes.

It's also probable that oil companies know that we are at or nearing Peak Oil, and they are reducing refinery operations in tandem with the expected decline in crude oil production.

However, this is a global market, and refineries don't have to be built in the U.S. If there is a perceived profit potential, the markets will respond

In any case, in my opinion, we need higher gasoline prices and we need them now. There is no way that the suburbs are going to survive the post-Peak Oil age, and any efforts to keep gasoline prices low only offer false hope to suburban dwellers. In my opinion, we need a much higher gasoline tax. And again, the best response to higher gasoline prices is to rearrange your life so that you minimize--or eliminate--your direct use of gasoline.

I agree... gas should be much more expensive to reflect it's actual value & environmental costs.

I've oten wondered why refining hasn't been 'offshored' due to labor/land cost and EPA reg's like everything else.

I would reckon that trying to import fuel of 50 differing standards would have been a logistical nightmare.

In NZ all Petrol Stations get deliveries from the same bowsers no matter what the "badge".

Closing down refineries don't necessarily equal lower price crude oil as quoted in WTI. If those refineries are designed for heavy crude, then WTI quality oil will not be freed up, instead you see a widening of the differentials.

Which we are exactly seeing it post-Katrina.

Hey, I forgot to tell you I went jogging around the Exxon Mobil HQ the other day. Interestingly, the place is accessible by mass transit (bus).

Also, there are some apartment buildings in walking distance, although I must say it did not look like too many of the executives were walking around the neighborhood.

There is no apparent evidence of PO from the outside. Don't know about the inside.

You'd have to be an Exxon/Mobil executive to afford the rent on those places. I would love to walk to work. Problem is, walkable communities are only for the super-rich.
