According to the sec. of state Van Geel, dirty cars should pay more for their parking permit in the future. In doing so, he hopes to reduce the number of dirty SUVs and 4x4 cars in the streets of Dutch cities.
Quote:
Owners of "clean" cars might benefit of reduced parking prices in Dutch cities. This has been said by secretary of state of environmental issues, mister Pieter van Geel (Christian Democrats). Cities will be able to differentiate in the price they ask for a residential parking permit, and they can do that on the basis of the pollution level. A dirtier car will therefor pay a higher price.
To make this possible, Van Geel cooperates with minister of Internal Affairs, Johan Remkes (Liberals) in a law reform. The secretary of state wants the new law enforced as of January 1, 2007.
According the Van Geel, a similar approach is working well in Sweden already. There they have different parking prices for clean and dirty cars.
Labor backs the plans of the secretary of State. It is long overdue that the govenment creates tools for local autorities to improve air quality, says Member of Parliament, Diederik Samson (Labor).
My questions:
- Is it right to use a parking permit to force SUV's out of the city?
- What is an dirty car in the eyes of Van Geel? According to some people, diesel cars are dirty, others just look at the mileage, the age or the weight.
- Do you think it is right if a city denies the owner of a certain car the right to park his car?

North Americans are less 'enthused' of the government micromanaging our lives. Europeans are more submissive to authority.
In my country, this would be a provincial jurisdiction and any government that even gave a hint of this type of selective legislation would be kicked out....not just over the regulation but more so over the principal of less government intervention. We accept general regulations for air emissions but not as they impact individual lifestyle choices. There's more trucks and SUVs sold in Alberta than cars. Even if less, the bureaucrats would be told 'stick it up your nose'.

Yes, SUV's should be banned! Never produce them! All cars with a low mileage per gallon should be banned!

The amount of pollution (fine particles) that the car releases in the air

No but that is not what this is about. This is about new permits for car parking!

Cars with low mpg produce more pollution than cars with high mpg; it's tautologically true. Older cars have lower mpg. Heavier cars have lower mpg. Heavier cars are also a danger to lighter cars (especially in Europe, where compact hatchbacks are a favourite of many people) and motorcycle/scooter/moped riders (also more abundant in Europe). Heavy and/or old cars have no place on our roads.

It's not my problem that some people like driving around in LMMT's (Large Mobile Metallic Trashcans). It is my problem when the rate of serious injuries in vehicular accidents increases due to LMMT's or when 2 LMMT's take the parking space of 3 compact hatchbacks (not mentioning scooters, mopeds, bicycles or other light vehicles).

There's no way you can justify owning a SUV in a country as flat and paved as ours. The only real reason you could have is keeping up with the Joneses (or Smid, if you like). It's nothing but a status symbol, nobody needs one. _________________
