The post-peak oil, post-housing bust economy is already driving most crazy, and we won't even get to the food riot stage for maybe two more years.

doesnt look good for the city of detroit. i heard that with gm's slashing 30,000 jobs, it would affect 400,000 jobs either directly, or indirectly. now add fords 30,000 jobs. ouch . there isnt much manufacturing left in america, and when you take out cars and car parts, it is going to hurt. you cant run a country on service based jobs only. ask the u.k

Most of our economy is based on building suburban sprawl. It's like a death wish ...

It actually gets better. There's a lot of people out there who believe we can maintain a strong and sustainable economy if we all take turns selling overpriced real estate to each other! There's also another theory that states we can all (yes ALL of us) can get rich off the stock market if we simply just buy and hold.

At least that's the message that's comming from the masters of misinformation...aka mainstream media.

Saw in the news today that eight in ten new jobs here in Norway is service-jobs. And already 3 out of four is working with service related jobs. There is in other words a large portion of the population that is working with things that will have little or no relevance after peak oil. The only reason why we can do this is because we export a lot of oil and fish.

The American empire probably would have been eclipsed by the Chinese or Russians even if it wasn't for PO. Peak oil and The US dependence on cheap oil will just speed up the process.

America has always protected their interests by encouraging people to buy American. But now, high oil gasoline prices and cheap foreign clothing tempt the US consumers to walk away from this policy.

richard heinberg said in one of his interviews that america gained its world prominance in the 1800's because they were the worlds foremost oil exporter. we were the saudi arabia at one time. and 8 out of every 10 jobs were manufacturing jobs. but now, we are the worlds foremost oil importer and biggest debtor nation the world has ever seen. peak oil is the reason. im not sure now much longer the government can keep it from collapsing. If it wasnt for cheap money and people borrowing against the equity of their houses, and maxing out 2-3 credit card, the economy would have collapsed already. we are living in very interesting times

Despite monumental labor costs in Belgium, Ford Genk just got another 600 jobs assigned just this week. They've already recruited 300 people earlier this year.
I know 900 people is peanuts compared to 30.000, but it's a lot of jobs if you keep in mind we have a population of merely 6mil.
Ofcourse scouting China and India for building new plants doesn't have anything to do with erm... anything... Rolling Eyes

This is just the start of a viscious cycle. Those 30,000 that are loosing their good paying jobs will now be putting less money into the economy affecting other companies bottom lines, meaning there will be more layoffs elswhere. Once the dominoes really start falling this whole house of cards is going down.

Anybody with their heads not in their ass can see where we are headed and have been headed for a while. You can't keep laying people off from good paying jobs and replacing them with service jobs and have a good economy. Maybe good for the top 1% when the former middle class will all be willing to work for just a bite to eat. Shocked

The plant closings are not limited to Detroit.

Oklahoma city is losing an assembly plant and 2200 jobs are going there.

Assembly plants in Lansing Mich., Doraville, Ga., and Ontario, Canada are closing soon. Spring Hill, Tenn will partially close leaving one line running. Moraine, Ohio plant will lose a shift.

An engine facility in flint Mich will close. A power train facility in Ontario and metal centers in Lansing and Pittsburgh.

GM also will close three service and parts operations facilities in Ypsilanti, Mich., and Portland, Ore with another to be announced later.

See http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10138507/ for the story this was taken from.

Looks like Michagan will be hard hit. Sad

Reports are coming out that Ford will close 8 plants as well. I haven't seen where ford has made any announcement on this yet. Just they plane to make cuts.

So the announcements are 30,000 each. 60,000 high paying jobs and then all the support jobs that will follow quickly. Sad

Detroit could be the seen of the first riots. Sad

A friend and neighbor of mine works for NUMMI, the joint Toyota GM plant in Fremont, CA. He says he'll earn over 100 grand this year (incl OT) working on the light truck assembly line. When he mentioned this to me I thought to myself, 'you and your factory are probably seen by NUMMI management as a very well illuminated target for replacement.'

Of course you can! The key is to generate real demand in real estate and shares. I call it the tulip madness principle. As long as everyone believes in it, it is garranty to work. But you must have faith because for without faith the God of wealth cannot work his miracles.

You are right, man. I am Chinese from Borneo Island. According to ancient Chinese tradition, Chinese New Year is the celebration of wealth and happiness. Well, I thought it just as silly as our theme song during Chinese New Year. Loosely translated from Mandarin Chinese New Year album

God of Wealth had arrived. Tong x4 Chiang [Traditional drum beats]
God of Wealth has arrived at my/our house main door. Tong x4 Chiang
Invited God of Wealth into our my/our home. Tong x4 Chiang

Bla,bla.. Forget already.. God of Wealth promotion is as lousy as your Santa/Santarina one.

I choose BorneoRagnarok as nickname. According to Viking Norse, Ragnarok is the battle at the end of the world between gods. So I adapted it to means "Battle at the End of Industrial Civilization between God of Gaia and evil God of Wealth and God of Perpetual Growth in Borneo" Twin evil gods are winning now with millions of hectares allocated for biodiesel plantations.

Ragnarok is preceded by Fimbulwinter, the mother of all winters. 3 sucessive winters with no summers in between. As a result, conflicts and wars break out and morality disappeared. Well, resources wars are coming to towns.

Jingle bells (x2)
Jingle all the way
Oh what's fun is to ride in a M1 Abrams tank

Dashing through the snow
On a M1 Abrams tank
Over the fields we go
Shooting all the way

Bells on bonnet ring
making spirits bright
What fun it is to ride and shoot
A sleighing song tonight

Jingle bells (x2)
Jingle all the way
O what fun it is to ride in a M1 Abrams tank , hey !

Now there's a Jingle Bells I can get into!

wow
I was talking to a friend tonight about how stressed out a time this is...
the old Christmas retail thing...
the spending binge
the cost of heating fuel
the end-of-year windup
(sorta like a Rocket Roger fastball)
...and a toothpick bat-

I think all that gets me through Christmas this year is my funnybone.
Ever wonder what will happen when a whole whack of people just can't afford the cost of remaining dumb enough to swallow the BS anymore?
Native intelligence just doesn't seem to equate $$$$ somehow....
Ever notice that the last letter removed from "shrewd" = a voracious little
ever-starved killing machine? Something to ponder...

Do you ever find yourself waking up wondering what the next chip outa the wall is going to be?
But in a kinda detached fascinated sorta way........
Is it just me-
or is there some real fury growing in the escutcheon...
the old red-coated fat man is still jolly, sort of,
but those elves are sharpening something back there in the workshop.....
ho ho

I'm gonna quit now while I'm behind.

Think the US has troubles? The Norwegians have to deal not only with Peak Oil but also with Peak Fish. Looks like tough times are coming for everybody.
