Hoarding is exactly what the government is doing right now by filling the SPR, and frankly it's the best thing that could happen. It drives prices up. High prices encourage demand destruction. They also finance new well development. The hoarded oil gives us a buffer to fall back on once shortages become more prevalent. High prices are what we need in order to adapt to what's coming, and the sooner they happen, the better.

Wow, those guys know their stuff. I wonder what the Fed is up to? I know Alan Greenspan isn't dumb, he's been the chairman for quite a while if I remember correctly.

Debt Bubble Stretches to Breaking Point
By Jim Jubak

Snip…

“Should we stop worrying that the debt bubble created by the Federal Reserve since the 2000 market crash could still burst?
No way. Just the opposite, in fact. My three rules of bubbles, identified and explained here, say we're approaching the most dangerous period in the life of any bubble: the time when it is most in danger of breaking.”

On my lunch break I bought a Mountain Bike. A Schwinn.

I don't know anything about bikes. In fact my selection criteria--thanks in large part to the idiocy of the employees at the store--was more or less: "I'm going to buy the most expensive one because it will most likely be the best". Who said the growth model was inherently flawed? j/k

Aah, been there.

What are you going to use the bike for in the forseeable future?

If it revolves around large amounts of contorted riding over wet soil, keep the mtb tyres, and/or buy more.

If it's mostly dry soil and sealed roads, buy a pair of slicks (or more), and keep the knobblies in case (as you later said) you might need to ride around fields. I bought slicks a year and a half ago, and had them fitted for AUD70. I immediately noticed I was going 5-10km/h faster with the same energy into the pedals.

Oh, and you'll probably want to take some electrical tape or similar to the frame, so that your bike looks less flashy and is less desirable to thieves.

Waterbearer, my heartfelt sympathies (mostly for your friends and loved ones Laughing ). I'm a couple of months into quitting (still quitting rather than quit!) haven't bought a packet yet but as I tend to lurk in pubs and bars tend to nick the odd smoke. The sooner they ban smoking the better!

One word of caution. Do not consume lots of nicorettes and alcohol together, leads to mania! (also lead to researching this peak oil thing... )

I would say that the problem with a mountain bike after the crash is that your gear shifters and brake cables are going to wear out if you use it a lot, especially if you ever have to ride it in the rain.

To avoid this problem, I own a Huffy Sante Fe Cruiser, with back pedal brakes and only one gear. Also since it doesn't go offroad and the tires don't get "gripped" by the brakes as they do with grip brakes, the innertubes don't go flat as often because they are put under less stress.
