Bush: U.S. must break oil addiction
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush will describe the United States as "addicted to oil" in his State of the Union speech on Tuesday night and will urge the use of technology to reduce the dependence.
"America is addicted to oil, which is often imported from unstable parts of the world," Bush said, according to excerpts released by the White House. "The best way to break this addiction is through technology."

Historically, technology has just been a way to speed up the use of resources. Very little has or can conserve resources.
I think that this speach will be just another political con job to make the easily swayed public think that we have someone in charge to take care of us. |

Maybe he means nuclear technology? Sigh, probably not though. As usual, "technology" is used as a vague term to give an illusion of progress. More technology is not the answer.
But admitting the addiction is something at least. I'm sure it is all about politics anyway though. God forbid he actually have the country's best interests in mind! |

Whew! What a relief! For a moment there I though he was going to suggest that I'd actually have to walk, or cut back on energy use, or, you know, conserve. Apparently, we just have to buy more stuff. |

"Technology" more than likely means "hydrogen." Insert 25-30 minutes of pure tripe and a pontificating farce over the ability to fill up your car with water, watch for the glazed eyes of the populace once you mention that the only "exhaust" is "pure, clean water" and sit back and enjoy the show. The Murkan Dreem (motoring suburban utopia) will not stop in the face of expensive oil, because we'll never run out of water!! Water is freedom!

| Hmm I wonder if he'll mention Peak oil or something related. If he does don't expect to see me around for awhile, I'll be in the Hospital recovering from a stroke. |

Technology got us into this mess and technology can get us out of it. The Doomers saying that technology is evil and can't wait for thier hypothesised post PO calamaty to save Mother Earth from Evil Humanity and send us to the cow crap economy forget that technology is neither good nor evil, it what you do with it that is good or evil. Technology can easily used to make a sustainable indistrialized economy, The political will just isn't there yet and we have to get the world population down. _________________ "Peak oil is not an energy crisis. I like technology - it's one of the things that makes us humans.
But just "more technology" isn't very helpful. Appropriate technology is helpful. But nobody is much interested in the technologies I promote here at po.com, because they aren't all metallic and shiney, or atomic. _________________ No original ideas are contained in this post. |

If America is addicted to oil then GW is the pusher. He is an oil man and the one-timer owner of a major league sports team. Big American sports has always used monopoly tactics to purchase, close down, and destroy town and local sports franchises and is part of the oil oligopoly. That man is the sleaziest most bestial self-pleasuring phoney christian hypocrite on this or any level of hell. _________________

| I just find it ironic that he is one of the people that has been pushing the ‘great socialist easy motoring society’, by creating a ready market for oil use (all state subsidised of course for the good of humanity..and GM shareholders) and all the furnishings that go with it, which in turn, lucky devil, has made his family and all his buddies rich. Perhaps saying America is addicted is just another way of saying, look how successful I’ve been! |

You are right, but my concern is that it can't be done in time, or that we will end up chasing our tails. If Bush is talking about nuclear technology, sure, that's cool, and we may be on the right track. But I am skeptical about it because as you say, technology got us into this mess. I guess it's the political will part you mentioned that worries me. If the country was wholly united and honestly willing to solve this mess with no stupid politicizing and/or greed to get in the way, then it can be done. I just don't see that happening. |
