Like the illusion of Wall Street, with its vast and powerful investment banks, now shuttered, China too is an illusion perpetuated by the Globalists that gave us the 15,000 mile Caesar salad, poisoned cat food and lead based paint on babies' pacifiers. Like the illusion that money would come from thin air to always push housing prices higher, China has spent a generation pursuing its illusion. Pursuing an unattainable dream to be like the West, while 6000 years of its carefully shepherded top soil blows into the sea.

Hi all,
does anyone have any solid figures from reputable sources as to what % international tourism, backed by the airlines, really is to the world economy? I tried Wikipedia but it just defined international tourism and talked about various growth areas without answering this crucial question: What if all the airlines went bankrupt?

Didn't Kunstler say that this was going to happen this year? I hope not.

Here's a link from ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) from 1998...

http://www.icao.int/icao/en/atb/fep/EconContribution.pdf

Quote:
Considering direct and multiplier effects of air transport alone, a total output of $1 360 billion and 27.7 million jobs were generated worldwide in 1998, according to an estimate for the Air Transport Action Group (ATAG – a Coalition of broad-ranging organizations and businesses from civil aviation and related industries).

In a nutshell, more than four and a half per cent of world economic output may be attributed to the air transport component of civil aviation.

Pretty scary stuff, and oh yeah, I work in aviation... Shocked

Yeah, that does not sound good at all.

But the thing I am after is international tourism as a rough % of world GDP if we have such a figure.

But is tourism really that interesting in such a view? It is really just moving money around. Would be very serious for countries highly dependent on tourists though. Like Greece f.i.

I think a break down such as, fuel usage for

(a) tourism for short breaks
(b) tourism for long breaks
(c) freight for stuff that could go by boat
(d) freight for stuff that should not even bother going between countries such as flowers and out of season fruit and veg.

I have a hard job telling people that tourism is doomed (Mr Manwaring, I tell you doomed) because the air fares will be prohibitive. As for nationally owned airlines ....., why sink a country to prop up an airline?

I don't know what the world figures are, but I can quite safely say that the Gold Coast is Fracked with a capital "F".

Oh, and Qantas will last a while. It's one of the most profitable airlines around, I believe. This is primarily because of its long-haul nature.

A rough estimate would be probably about 10% combined for transport and tourism. Significantly higher in First World countries.

We get about as many tourists here in Sydney per year as we have people living here.

Here it is. It's about 10% for global GDP.

thing is, most richer people will gladly pay extortionate prices for air trips because they see holidays abroad as an entitlement and their right for working most of the rest of the year. i dont agree with them, by the way.

i think people would easily be even 10 times what they are paying now for a holiday once a year.

Assuming that they had the money. With the economy the way it is, this will be less and less likely.
