We cannot drill our way out of this oil crisis. Since 2000, oil companies working in the U.S. have doubled the number of wells drilled per year.
Although increased drilling has added new oil to the nation's supply, it has not done so fast enough to offset the terminal decline of existing fields.
We are going to have to import more of our oil. Period.

Texas isn't the most repressive US state by any stretch. There's a independent streak in native Texans that does not sit well with government interference in private lives. We don't even have a state income tax.

Hey Aarron,
I know you Texans like to think of your selfs as an independent folk. Hel, isn't there still a movement among your folk that Texas statehood was illegally ratified, and that Texas is still and independent republic.
The main problem I have with most Texans is that they believe in their own freedom to do as they please, but they don't like to extend that to any of the rest of us.
Also, those boys like to talk a good game of "We don't need no stinking government". But in the late '70s and early '80s, when the oil markets collapsed, the big boys from Houston went hat in hand to the feds saying "Help Us Please".

I don't know if that's fair... blanket judgments rarely are.
And just because traditional Texan values are fiercely independent, does not mean today's Texas is like that because there's a very large & growing non-native population here now, with different values.
And sure, the oil companies scramble for money like anyone else.

In case you were wondering if anyone ever read 1984 and said "Ya know. I'd like to live in a world like that." I don't believe this independent Texan business for a minute. Texans are into law and order. Law and order is the antithesis of freedom. Montanans are into freedom. How many people do you hear about getting executed up here? Two since the supreme court legalized it back in 1976. Texas has killed four people already this year.

Yes my generalization is pretty broad, but I was mostly thinking of your government officials, not everyday folk ( a gentleman named Ridge comes to mind).
I must say that the times I have spent in Texas were all very good. As a teen, in the late ‘70s, I spent a summer helping rehab an orange grove just outside of McAllen. All the folks treated me like a brother, and during this time was when I developed my taste for Tex-Mex cooking. But I think the little old Mexican woman who feed us just called it supper.
As I understand it, most of the groves around McAllen are gone now. Lost to more mindless development. What a shame. It was a beautiful area.

Right. Montana has like 940,000 people.
Texas has 23 MILLION people.
And that doesn't include the million or so here illegally who are unaccountable to society.
It's testament to our culture that we get along as well as we do.

Since about half our population isn't from here these days, things are a changin.
Lots of new folks... no more fireflies... have not seen a horny-toad in years. Times change.
As always.
But lots of things the same too.
We have our own separate electrical grid for example... don't trust you Yankees to keep things runnin smooth I guess.
And Rodeo is a big deal down here. Starts next weekend... biggest Rodeo I know of.
Sure we have our problems... but at least we don't have a funny accent.

I was sitting around the evening campfire at a primitive skills class last summer and our instructor pointed out to us that there were two different types of fireflies out that night. There was a breed that flew near the ground and another that hung out in the tops of the trees. They even had different lighting periods ... the ones in the trees, as I recall, stayed lit up longer.
So southern Missouri has lots of fireflies (and at least two different varieties of them).

I miss fireflies too in MN. You'll still see them in the summer in places with less human encroachment, but I know they have had to leave areas they used to inhabit.
