How then, do we move backwards? How does a society, with most of the people having no clue of future events, move from being dependent on a vast and intertwined network of goods and services produced by the indigenous people of whereever, to a local resource and renewable energy based society, and do so in the timeframe available (20-30 years using the most liberal extimates, 10-20 with resonable estimates, 5-10 with worst case scenarios), all the while prices on everything increasing, world politics getting more militaristic, governments continuously reducing civil liberties, shortages of goods on the market and weather patterns resembling bad Hollywood movies?
Yeah - seeing the stars! That's got to be on top of the list. But I used to draw and paint a lot, and I think it would be nice to get back into that. Also I'd like to experiment with making my own paper, and paints. And reading and more reading. And singing too.. large choirs like they have in Wales - all the locals could get together and ruin "Climb Every Mountain".
Personally.. for me, I will need to keep a few things to keep me happy, that includes a beautiful women, music, books and, of course, a 4 foot tall halfpipe & 100 bulk skateboards . Other then that I could manage living life and learning and adapting, but I really do need at least 3 of those things (heck, the books could go, haha).
I agree, as humans we can adapt quite quickly given the surroundings change around us.. once we got off our lazy asses we'll be able to enjoy doing things that we now take for granted, and some hard labor really wont seem like such a pain in the ass. But a good book or something to read is always a great way to pass time, and is a enjoyable activity. Sex, well come on whats life without that, and music. Think of the good times to be had playing the old Floyd 50 years in the future, think of how good music will sound then. also the saxaphone has to go too.. And the halfpipe could always be stripped down for its wood/nails later, in the future we certainly wont take for granted things like we do now..

I've always been able to see the stars at night, provided the clouds aren't blocking the sky out - that includes in Glasgow city centre, the streetlights don't affect the skyview here - tho' of course they appear brighter w/o any lights around.
Shooting VCRs sounds like a waste of good electronic components ; my mother is always throwing out old electronics stuff I keep - even if they don't work there will be plenty of components in them that do work. They can be de-soldered off the board - de-soldering pens are availible. _________________ the frogurt is also cursed

My husband used to svae parts like that, some for TV, but even more for computers.
But VCRs are cheap. We get them at auctions for a buck or two each. They're basically other people's garbage.
Same with coffee pots, vaccuums, etc. We don't fix electronics anymore, just pick up another one.
TSR Games comes out with "Papers and Paychecks". Using just pencil, paper, firgurines and rulebooks, you roleplay being students and workers in c.2000 society. Steve Jackson Games comes out with the rival GURPS Peak Oil.
