Hello,

I'm 24 years old and work for a title insurance firm. However, my first love has always been economics (i have an accounting degree) which brought me to Peak Oil about 1 1/2 years ago. It's always been in the back of my mind but lately with oil prices rising so dramatically I have realized it may be sooner than the 2010 date thrown around most often.

I have been preparing, I live in a very urban setting and make decent money but not a lot. So far I have these things; If I have missed anything please give me a suggestion.

1 "heavy duty" first aid kit
10 cases of MRE's
5 shoulder strap military style duffle bags
An assortment of vitamins
1 can of bleach
1 water purifier
2 machetes
2 hand axes
2 blankets
2 ponchos
2 pair boots
1 tarp
assortment of ropes
2 bicycles
1 can opener
2 books on edible plants
1 survival book
1 bible
1 solar/hand crank radio
a few packages of lighters and matches

soon 2 get one 12 gauge and one .22 pistol with ammo

I may have left some small nick nacks and other things out like tweazers but I think that sums up most of it.

Also, my father lives in a less urban setting with a lake and pine trees on about 3 acres so I would go there if anything happened. I have been looking for "easy" to make windmills and/or hydro for some small electricity. I have given my father info on peak oil and he agreed but he thinks it won't happen anytime soon, I plan to press him some more soon. He hasn't done anything to prepare so if there are some things that come to anyone's mind that may be useful with access to like (besides the obvious like fishing) then please let me know. Thanks

In Southern zoos, they have the name of the animal...and a recipe

I hear that zebra is actually very tasty.

I work at a zoo, and I've sometimes contemplated what to do with all the animals when TSHTF. I haven't yet figured out what to do with the disabled bald eagles.

We don't have any bears, but we have ostriches, and I hear they ain't bad. We have some pretty weird, obscure animals; I'm interested in what Cayman rock iguana tastes like.

I also don't know what to do with the golden tamarins. Not much meat on them, and they'd probably wreck the ecosystem if I let them go.

All survival kits need a sleeping bag, first and foremost. Blankets will not do. The sleeping bag, a good one, is an absolute survival must. More people die of hypothermia in a survival situation than from lack of food or water. The blanket simply can't keep you alive, in most situations, in snow and ice. For a mere $60, you can buy a great sleeping bag rated down to -20 degrees, so, its foolish not to do so. Always buy a synthetic bag, not down. Synthetic will keep you warm even if its wet, down will not. The sleeping bag will last a lifetime, is light weight, fits in a back pack, and is a mobile shelter (don't need anything for heat). If you insist on carrying a blanket, buy wool, it keeps you warm when wet too.

Great list. Might I add a few suggestions?

-good gun cleaning kit; lot of extra CLP and cleaning patches (important!)
-lots and lots of ammunition for your guns. Can never have too much!
-tools for gun disassembly
-needles and heavy-duty thread
-magnifying glass
-scissors
-pliers
-small folding shovel
-lots of salt packets
-several water-tight bottles of aspirin and penicillin
-several pairs of leather work gloves
-map of location where you plan on escaping to
-Silva compass
-2 fixed-handle Buck knives and 2 sharpening stones
-very compact candle lantern with lots of small candles
-small pair of binoculars
-warm hats and gloves
-extra toothpaste and toothbrushes
-at least 2 plastic water canteens
-lots of fishing hooks and 2 spools of heavy fishing line
-2 silver emergency balankets (they're small)
-small plastic mirror
-sunglasses
-'SAS Survival Guide' book
-several small tupperware containers to store gathered or killed food

Heres my suggestions.
See if you can trade out the MRE's for freeze dried food in a can. Shelf life is 30 years and it tastes much better, although i does require water.
Cut down the duffle bags. You have too many to be practical.
Vitamins hav a shelf life. If their over a year or so old, replace them.
Dump 1 machete and hand ax. You only need one of each. Buy a good knife.
Same with the bicycle.
Buy an extra can opener. Remember, with vital items 2 is 1 and 1 is none. Always plan on one goin *** up on you, and a can opener is a small item. Same with a compass.
Dump the bible. Faith is in your heart, and doesnt weigh anything (Unless your guilty....)
Get water proof matches. Also get a flint and steel (Old fashioned fire starters)
Dont get a .22 pistol, get a rifle. If your looking for a all-in-one package get a shotgun..22LR combo. Its a .22LR and .410 shotgun all in one.

Obviously, thats just changes to your current gear. Theres a ton of stuff I could add.

A can to make char with. Basicaly a can you can close with a hole about the diameter of a pencil. throw some cloth inside throw it on a camp fire till it stops smoking from the hole and you have an easy starter for that steel/flint. Been a while since I done that, anybody know a better way?
