We cannot drill our way out of this oil crisis. Since 2000, oil companies working in the U.S. have doubled the number of wells drilled per year.

Although increased drilling has added new oil to the nation's supply, it has not done so fast enough to offset the terminal decline of existing fields.

We are going to have to import more of our oil. Period.

excellent! we're certainly not going to need farms in the near future. especially near los angelas with so few people. I see this as a great move.

The powerdown is going well, and I'm starting to think we're going to make it through this "peak oil" stuff just fine.

Where I live, much of the productive farmland is being bulldozed for condos.
When I see that I breath a sigh of relief.

Ah, I see. Apparently, the city used to own the land but sold it to a developer. In that case, the issue is not so clear. It is unfortunate the city chose to sell the property, but it seems the battle was lost then. The property is now owned by a private party.

I'm always surprised how people view private property. I would not expect to be able to go down to the local city park and grow vegetables.

The idea of "private property" was lost when property taxes came about. How can you OWN it and be taxed on it EVERY year?
Simple answer...You dont own it!

I'm inclined to agree. In fact, I'd go one step further and say that you can only own what you can hold by force of arms.

That's not quite right. They tax you because they can, not because you own property. They only use your property to estimate how much they can tax you.

I don't know. If you don't "own" the property, they won't tax you for it.

If you do "own" the property and don't pay the taxes, men with guns will eventually run you off the property and sell it.

The old advice to governments in the UK was "Tax as much as you dare".

Remember in a democracy these taxes are implemented by people who were elected, and similarly not repealed by people who were elected.

I disagree with the right to own land. The land was there long before man and should not be mettled with! It is really a perverse (as in unnatural) construction that has helped our society to become what it is.

Simple, because the costs associated with things like fire and police protection, public schools, utility and infrastructure development and maintenance aren't one-time charges. They are ongoing, and never-ending. Which of these services would you rid yourself of, Spec? (I know your answer: schools) Razz

Bulldozing a 14 acre farm... and this should suprise you?! Smile
One interesting note when it comes to ownership of land.
In the UK all land not privately owned by individuals or corporations are considered property of The Crown. In the US, all land not privately owned by individuals or corporations is considered the property of the CITIZENS of the United States. Land taken away from individuals or corporations by the govt. for whatever reason, is in theory supposed to be restored by law, to the citizens of the United States. But as we know, this rarely if ever happens.
The Govt. of the United States holds this land 'in trust' for the American People. The Govt. in the UK, holds this land 'in trust' for the Crown.
Thought you might want to know...

I went and visited the farm. Within a few moments of walking through the gate, a voice behind me called out, "Hey, can I help you? Who are you? What are you doing here?"

I have no idea how this person recognized me (or failed to recognize me) from behind and 30 yards away as obviously not belonging there. There are over a hundred plots on that farm... how did she manage to single me out?

If you've ever been there, you could say in a moment what it was. I will not elaborate, but the elephant is in the living room.

There are no uniforms or security guards or badges or anything like that to identify who belongs there and who does not.

I was told that I was not welcome to tour the farm, by the way. Would I like to come back on Saturday when the farmers market was open?

News article

Quote:
OAKLAND, California, September 20, 2006 (ENS) - California Attorney General Bill Lockyer today filed a lawsuit against six U.S. and Japanese auto manufacturers, alleging their vehicles' emissions have contributed significantly to global warming and harmed the economy and environment of California.

The suit is the first of its kind in the United States seeking to hold automakers for the damages caused by greenhouse gas emission produced by their vehicles.

"Global warming is causing significant harm to California's environment, economy, agriculture and public health," Lockyer said. "The impacts are already costing millions of dollars and the price tag is increasing."

How did those cars get there? The automakers must have snuck them in there late at night under the cover of darkness.

If the United States ever breaks apart I certainly won't miss California.

...and who then snuck in all the roads, parking lots and highways? (...Oh let me guess.)..... the state of Caifornia?
Opps!

Well I won't miss the rest of the United States either. It sure would be nice to not have to associate with the stupid South.
