I think this is the beginnings of an economy based on perpetual growth and fossil fuel energy running headlong into geological energy constraints. Basically I see an undulatory downward path for the rest of my life. From here out, I think any rallies in our economic condition are going to be met with spiking commodity prices that knock us right back down.

CNN: Tsunami warnings after 8.0 quake off Tonga

Tsunami warnings were issued for Fiji and New Zealand early Thursday (local time) after a massive earthquake measuring about 8.0 in magnitude shook the southern Pacific Ocean.

The quake's epicenter was about 90 miles off the coast of Tonga, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake struck Wednesday 3:26 p.m. UTC, or 4:26 a.m. Thursday in Tonga.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a tsunami wave could hit Suva, Fiji, as early as 5:13 p.m. UTC (5:13 a.m. local time) before affecting New Zealand's coastal cities in the following hours.

According to the tsunami warning issued, there is no verification of a tsunami yet. Only the possibility of one, so the warning was issued. I'd expect some sort of verification wouldn't take too long though.

CNN just said that the time that a potential tsunami would have hit Fiji has already past. No word yet from Fiji... Honolulu wouldn't see anything until about noon local time if there was one.

[Edit: Midnight changed to noon. Thanks Pops!]

TSUNAMI THREAT TO HAWAII.

HOWEVER...SOME COASTAL AREAS IN HAWAII COULD EXPERIENCE SMALL SEA
LEVEL CHANGES AND STRONG OR UNUSUAL CURRENTS LASTING UP TO

CNN just issued a correction on the AM/PM timing for Hawaii. For a minute there I thought I had heard wrong. New Zealand has also been dropped from the warning. A tsunami has now been confirmed to exist, but at only 40cm in height it is of concern only to the islands immediately around the earthquake zone.

Last update: CNN says all tsunami warnings are canceled. Nothing but a scarry earthquake for those in the area.

Hope it's not a forerunner of a bigger earthquake.

The area in most danger from a potential tsunami, Tonga, did not get the warning.

Why? They were suffering a power outage.
