I think this is the beginnings of an economy based on perpetual growth and fossil fuel energy running headlong into geological energy constraints. Basically I see an undulatory downward path for the rest of my life. From here out, I think any rallies in our economic condition are going to be met with spiking commodity prices that knock us right back down.

of course, the guy was having an affair with his drug dealer's gay lover. It has nothing to do with oil militants and attacks on oil rigs and personel. Laughing

The spin doctors must be getting pretty dizzy these days

I'm so glad my dad got back from Nigeria yesterday. He has told me in the past that prostitution is pretty bad near the compound. A very ugly westerner can have the pleasure of the company of a nigerian teenage girl for about $200 a month. Equally scary considering how bad AIDS is in Nigeria.

After having traveled in some of these inhospitable places, I just hate to see this sort of thing happen.

Odds are that the guy they lit up was just a middle manager, trying to make a living, and not getting massive bonuses etc. etc. so no political statement was made except to discourage anyone from going down there for any reason. The big cheeses in Houston were unaffected. He was just down there trying to drill a hole, notwithstanding what he was or was not doing in his time off.

The stupidity of moving the compound from near the port to Lagos is apparent: You have them in a place where the authorities have a better chance for security but you have to drive them every day to the job site.

Anyway this Nigeria situation (rebels, violence, attacks on oil infrastructure) has an excellent chance to be a catastrophe, if it is not already.

36, which is old and wise enough to avoid catching something that won't scrub off or can't be handled with antibiotics..

As the story goes, the "locals" will show up after hours at a bar on the compound and have to be out by sunrise the next morning. These dirty old men hook up with 2 or 3 at a time.

Not good:

Baker Hughes Executive Assassinated in Nigeria; Company Evacuates Staff

A U.S executive working for Baker Hughes, an oil services company which contracts with oil majors, was shot dead
in an apparently planned assassination near the oil city of Port Harcourt in Nigeria. As a precautionary measure,
Baker Hughes has pulled its staff out of Port Harcourt to Lagos.
