I just found a quote in Daniel Pinchbecks recently published 2012, The Return of the Quetzalcoatl, which would deserve the actual review, since it came out only a month ago while Earth Ascending is a 1988 publication.
Anyway, here the quote in Pinchbecks Chapter Five:
What appears to be the established order of the present-day civilisation is actually only the inert but spectacular momentum of a high velocity vehicle whose engine has already stopped functioning.
Sounds like language that should resonate with every hard core PeakOiler. I just finished Pinchbecks 'Breaking open the head' and can highly recommend it.

Several times lately the words "suspended animation" have popped in to my head. It makes perfect sense in the context of the above quote.

Another noteworthy quote from 2012:
The Catholic mystic Pierre Teilhard de Chardin foresaw the development of a "new, integrated mind" of global humanity, calling it the "nooshpere,"from the Greek word nous, meaning mind. Noting that our planet consists of various layers- a mineral lithoshere, hydroshere, bioshpere and atmosphere consisting of troposhere, stratoshere, and ionosphere Chardin theorized the possible existence of a mental envelope, a layer of thought, encompassing the Earth. The "hominization" of the Earth had concluded the phase of physical evolution, during which species multiplied and developed new powers, leading to an entropic breakdown of the bioshphere. This process, Chardin realized, requiring the tapping of the stored energy and amassed mineral resources of the planet could happen only once. When physical evolution ended, the evolving stem of the Earth switched from the outer layers to the level of cognition, developed through human consciousness, containing the entirety of our thought as well as the planet's future evolutionary program.

Another possibility is that when we have used up the resources we go back to the Stone Age or worse and nous becomes noose.

Sounds a little bit like the internet itself... a network where millions of minds 'plug in' daily- a macro neural net of sorts, which exponentially speeds up learning, communication and possibly even our evolution through continuous feedback.
Or the internet could be just a 'scaffolding' of some kind... training us to grasp the concept of linking up with a higher consciousness, one that is made up of all humans, where each one of us is really just a single neuron or 'node' in the network. In the current state of human evolution, the ego (which creates the illusion of individuality) is still too prominent in our consciousness to grasp or accept the reality of the larger being we make up. It's been pointed out that a shift, or awakening, is taking place right now toward this understanding... 2012 has been picked by some as the date of the 'tipping point', where acceptance of collective consciousness exceeds resistance to it.
Now does anyone actually believe any of this will happen? Probably not many... but really which would you rather see? The dawn of a new era in human evolution -or- a bunch of desperate people fighting over the last remaining tins of fruit cocktail at the grocery store? If you believe in quantum physics and the idea that our thoughts create our reality... it's clear that we have a choice which path we take. All the fear mongering, talk of 'crap hitting the fan' and doomerism only contributes to the manifestation of our own downfall. The negative thinking is a huge part of the problem. When you change your thoughts you change your world... _________________ "If you're always looking for the invisible hand to guide you, you will find that the invisible hand often gives you the invisible finger." - some guy on CNBC

albente,
No I haven't read the book. It does look interesting but
with my budget I'm probably not going to read it, unless
I can find it at the library.
I am somewhat familiar with de Chardin's concept of a
'noosphere'. I must admit it's an intriguing and pleasing
concept. Isn't the gist of the idea the earth is heading
towards an 'omega point' where a sort of planetary
consciousness is emerging? As such humanity represents the
'growing tip' of evolution. From rock to life to consciouness
then... superconsciouness?
Perhaps this concept of evolution is not correct? What if
there's no aim, no goal, no direction to 'evolution'? In
which case humanity doesn't represent any sort of evolutionary
'head', nor are we heading towards a glorious summation.
The large human brain is not the result of some irresistible
evolutionary force, but more an arms race between life
itself. There's a tendency for predators to have larger
brains than their prey, and since humanity is currently
the top predator it's not surprising we have a large brain.
Perhaps a large brain is primarily useful as a tool to defend
(and attack) other forms of life and ones peers, and only
incidentally useful for things like making tools, science,
religion & reflection.
And what if Chardin is correct, and the Heart of hearts is
indeed trying (in vain up to this point) to unfold in and
through humanity? Even if such is the case nothing is certain,
for we hang in the balance. Just as every star is a battle between
the implosive force of gravity and the explosive force of
nuclear fire, perhaps the power of love will not be enough
to overcome humanities egotistical tendencies and we
are heading towards collapse. In my opinion 'Yin & Ying' or
good and evil are very nearly balanced in the human condition.
Even Chardin admitted that collapse may be our fate.
It's this balance that makes our current situation so interesting.

To challenge the Gregorian Calender is to challenge the current system. Nothing wrong with acid BTW eric, did you have any confrontation with real acid and if so would you please be so generous to share your experiences with those of us who were left behind? There is a lot of substances out there 'sold as' but some of you guys might be aware about the Kansas rocket silo incident...quote: According to DEA reports, black market LSD availability dropped by 95% after the two were arrested in 2000. These arrests were a result of the largest LSD manufacturing raid in DEA history.

What a loss! Now we have to make up with praying and other random practices of the mind in the good hope to alternate our everyday consciousness which has proven all so destructive, or didn't it so far?
P.S. 'The Two' in this case referring to William Leonard Pickard and Clyde Apperson, two of the most remarkable spirits in recent history.
