Thanks for posting this very sobering document up. When a body such as the US Army are saying that we may well peak in a few years and then goes on to say that 'oil wars are certainly not out of the question' you have to sit up and take serious note.

Up till now all the PO literature that I have read is from the main authors in this subject, guys who you could argue have a vested interest to exaggerate the real picture but I can't see why the US army would have any such motivation.

I note that this document is not restricted in any way so why isn't the media getting this message getting out to the general populace? There would be some panic but I'd like to think that most people who read it would take note and get serious about their oil guzzling lifestyles.

Simple. There is no upside to this story. However, Roscoe Bartlett parades it on C-Span every chance he gets.

Thanks for posting Monte! (I must have missed it the first time around) That one is hard to ignore even for some of the die hard optimists that I know. I like the quote from the executive summary:

Quote:
...the Army must immediately begin to consider the short- and long-term issues involved in developing enduring energy policies and solutions for its military installations. To sustain its mission and ensure its capability to project and support the forces, the Army must insulate itself from the economic and logistical energy-related problems coming in the near to mid future.

.
Of course the Armed forces will turn against the need of the people ,
It will be a " NATIONAL EMERGENCY " declared from the presidential lectern with congress as a chorus , very dramatic , the speech alone will be probably grand

The hilarious bit will be the unseemly bitch fight between the services for the last dredges of the black stuff ,
Airforce the greediest ,
Army moaning the loudest ,
Navy quietly confident with its nuke powered ships but still asking for the same share ,
the Marines grabbing the president as hostage during the negotiations while the CIA, NSA and FBI dig out dirty secrets on everybody in exchange for a few barrels ... Twisted Evil

I'm surprised how no one caught how strange this quote is on page 8 of report:
Quote:
In
the long run, worldwide natural gas production will peak in the 2030-2035 time
range and then decline as an available resource.

What is so strange about it , it's quite reasonable plus or minus a few years ?

I'm not being smart , this is just a question

I thought worldwide peak of natural gas is close to an imminent peak.

Conventional domestic might be, but not the world, IIRC. Shale gas is going to be a huge play both now, and in the future.

According to my model simulations 'Peak Oil' should now be occurring (within the 2006-2007 time frame [1]) and 'Peak Gas' will promptly follow suit in either 2008 or 2009 [2].

Thanks for that link, although there's no mention of opportunities in nonconventional NG, though, esp. in light of recent successes with shale gas. I think it's a given that conventional NG is near peak, if not past.

A major natural gas discovery does not prove that North America haven't reached peak natural gas. That's like saying peak oil haven't been reached because there's a major oil discovery.

Quote:

A. I recently submitted an academic article on that with a graduate student in Chicago. We see about 2007 as the peak date for North American natural gas production.

One of the interesting things with natural gas, though, is that the technology is so good that reserves are being depleted much faster. This means the peak may hold out a little longer, maybe even until 2008, then it will be followed by an even sharper fall.

http://www.energybulletin.net/11789.html

Most importantly.
Quote:
The Barnett Shale is known as a "tight" gas reservoir, indicating that the gas is not easily extracted. The shale is very hard, and it was virtually impossible to produce gas in commercial quantities from this formation until recent improvements were made in hydraulic fracturing technology and horizontal drilling, and there was an upturn in the natural gas price.
