Shocked Up here in Canada they start evacuating at 3 miles. I am sure you of all people knows it doesn't take long for a wild fire to burn up and travel 6 miles. Stay safe eh? Good luck.

My sisters house burned to a pile of ashes in a New Mexico wildfire. She showed up at my place with nothing left to her name but her kids, a couple of pairs of levis and a box of pictures.

That particular fire went from about 1000 acres to 50,000 acres in less than 24 hours, assisted by a 50 mph wind and 100 degree heat. It burned about 1/4 of a town of 25,000 residents to the ground, and had the firemen running for their lives.

Good luck out there in the desert fire areas....sounds really bad.
Monte, how close id the fire to your Slide Rock State Park? We were just out there over spring break, and my daughters said Slide Rock was by far the best part....is that the area on fire?
They are very sad about this fire, as am I.

2,400 acres now. Still only 5% contained. The six miles is horizontal. I am also 2,500 feet lower. It's hard to describe the terrain here.

Basically, we have a fire on top of a 7,000 mesa dripping fire down the canyon cliffs into the canyons below at 4,500 feet. It is threatening several homes in Oak Creek Canyon just a couple of miles below the famous Slide Rock State Park.

We have 600 of the best Hotshot fire figthers in the country on the scene.

Here is the start of the Brins fire last Sunday. It was west of downtown and moved north up the cliff to the right to the top of MT. Wilson. It was started by a transient camper in the wilderness area.

Here is the view from the top of MT. Wilson looking north up Oak Creek Canyon. You can see the San Francisco Peaks near Flagstaff in the distance. The fire has dropped into this canyon directly to the right in this photo.

A shot of the Barranca Fire that was 1 1/2 miles from my house just before the Brins Fire.

This is the area threatened.

You can see how steep the cliffs are here.

Monte,
I've always wondered: How do the firefighters, or whomever, determine the source of the fire? Is it just their best guess, or do they know for sure? I just don't see how the presence of a fire ring near where the fire started is ample evidence of anything.
Thanks and good luck.

It is usually quite apparent. In this case, no vehicle tracks and a campsite. Wind direction, no other possible source of ignition.

Here is how things looked this morning: The blackened mountain is Wilson Mountain. You can see the fire burning a little back towards Sedona proper. This mainly shows the aftermath of the fire as it moved over the top of Wilson Mt. The fire is now below the V you see at the extreme right and up the canyon.

The next photo shows the town to the left.

Here is a zoom shot. The fire has dropped off this mountain top and into the canyon to the right.

It is much worse than it looks as I couldn't get any close shots of the main fire to the right in the canyon.

Fire is almost contained and out, but they have closed the entire Coconinio National Forest, perhaps for the entire summer, the fire danger is so extreme.

No hiking, no camping, no biking, no fishing, no off-road.

No business for our community. Welcome to global warming?
