Tried out a DPMS .308 this weekend.
Thats a badass gun. It doesnt kick much more then a AR15. I'm thinking of upgrading...... _________________ "Battle not with monsters, lest ye become a monster, and if you gaze into the

That said, I'll stick with my 5.56. At close ranges its terminal ballistics are superior to .308 anyways so.....

Hmmm...
First, I never said "get rid of". Just upgrade. I'd still use the AR most of the time, but if social engagements ever required a .308 it'd be nice to have it.
Besides, I'm always looking for reasons to buy another gun. _________________ "Battle not with monsters, lest ye become a monster, and if you gaze into the

- Clone pistol 1911 in .45 (proved caliber, simple mechanics), there's a lot where to choose from, but as a comment, i haven't heard a bad thing about the Norinco ones, and they have a very good price.
- .22 rifle (and since they are not expensive, why not a revolver as well?).
- 12 gauge shotgun, ( I prefer the Mossberg model 590, very reliable).
If you have a more generous budget i would say a 9mm pistol, just because there's so much ammo around and a SKS/AK, those a made to last.

I wish I had such a "limited budget."
What we can get in NZ
AR15s here are more expensive than M1As, SLR, AK. I'm still looking around for high cap semi-autos. _________________ regards,

When I finally get my permit in Italy I'll be allowed three weapons.
What would you recommend for:
- 12 Gauge
- Semi-Auto
- Pistol
I guess using a 9mm semi-auto would enable me to rationalise on ammo. Are they really that inferior to 223, 308 etc?
A beretta 92 seems quite nice. Has anybody got any advice on the Beretta CX Storm? Apparently they can share mgazines with the pistol.
Am I best off going for a pump-action or semi-auto shotgun?
BTW, I'm a neophyte in this domain, so please bear that in mind. I'd want my wife to get a permit as well, so I need to ensure she can shoot something as well. If she gets the permit, we could end up with six arms (which may include 22LR semi-auto for my wife).
I'll probably get a 177 airgun for killing rabbits, I used to be quite effective with one as a kid and you could get a lifetime's supply of ammo for next to nothing.

Couple of things on the Berreta 92. I just sold a 92FS. Two reasons. 1. It's pretty big, i.e. difficult to carry concealed. Don't know if that's an option in Italy anyway. 2. The safety really is a pain in the butt. You have to teach yourself to deactivate it every time you draw. It adds at least a half second to your draw stroke, and it means you can't get a good grip right out of the holster because you have to reposition your grip to take the safety off. Also you can accidentally activate the safety when you rack the slide leading to you frantically pulling the trigger with no response. If I was going to get another Beretta 92, I would make sure it was the 92g. The 92g doesn't have the safety that you have to fiddle with. Other than that, it's a very good gun. Well built, reliable. Crisp action. _________________ "So while you sit and whistle Dixie with your money and your power.

well italy makes quality weapons so i would stick with those since they will probably be easier on the wallet. benelli make some damn nice shotguns.
i would go for the pump action for three reasons. 1 it will be less expensive. 2 they are usually less complicated mechenisims and therefor less delicate and easier to work on. 3 the sound of the slide is a hige deterent.
as for the pelletgun, i would get one in the 22 caliber as it has much more knockdown power.

The CX storm caught my eye last spring. The magazines are compatable with the beretta 92 but they only hold 12(.45) or 20(9mm) rounds. Neat looking gun but for the same price you could buy a true battle carbine that holds 30 rnds like a Ruger Mini-14 or $300-500 more you can get a AR-15. _________________ In other words, it's a huge sh*t sandwich, and we're all gonna have to take a bite.-from Full Metal Jacket

Since the old thread is locked I will try to kill a couple of birds with one post.
The racking of a shotgun does work. This happened 16 years ago in Hollylock Scotland. I was standing topside security watch with .45 unloaded of course, they didn't let us squids carry loaded weapons even during missile loading (another great sea story there with a rupturing HP air hose). My partner carried an unloaded shotgun, ammo was carried in a pouch. Normal day nothing going on giving the finger to green peace, bouncing coffee cups off the out board boats anacotic (sp) coating. Security was probably pretty lax for today's goings on, we verified those coming aboard had military ID and that they were on the boarding list. We were there for show and considered ourselves targets if anything actually went down, but alas I digress. Officer joe comes across the gangplank and just walks past us as if we were not there. I politely call out, no answer, he is walking away from us heading to the hatch, louder I call out and still nothing, I begin heading to the 1MC to call out a security violation thinking here goes another drill. The other topside watch is rushing to the hatch making a challenge he saw a pistol, officer joe is partway down the hatch. This guy Vic he was a character he screamed halt, and racks the empty shotgun in the back of this guys head with him halfway down the hatch, officer joe freezes. He climbs back out shacking visibly, the OOD scrambles topside, followed by the weps and xo. He was armed with a .45 and was acting as security dispatch and felt he didn't have to stop due to his mission. There are another two pages of FUBAR here but point made is that a racking shotgun stopped someone that WAS armed...I don't miss that.
From the pic that is part of what I have. I am 90% mil spec ammo for many reasons posted here by others in previous threads. I like to think I have enough to cover most everything from high powered rifles to high capacity pistols. I don't know what 3 I would pick if limited to that, it would depend on situation. Please don't make me choose until I have to, as I take at least 8 guns to go shoot squirrels (LOL). I will go the other way by listing three I know that I could leave and not miss.
SPAS 12 with folding stock and elbow clip looks great, but is too heavy, and slow in semi auto, and requires hot loads to cycle properly, and in manual pump mode it can wear you out within a few rounds.
Tec 9 with barrel extensions and 50 rnd clips, again looks good on TV and on the table. When shooting the front jumps like a yoyo, and having had two firing pins sheered due to the poor safety design. So now there it sits needing some TLC.
Desert Eagle .50AE again bought it for looks, one thing is a very accurate weapon if you can hold it that long. Didn't like the action I like double action in my semi. The round while it has a lot of knockdown power (shatter bowling balls) had no penetration even with wad cutters, I never shot any FMJ, but when firing into the dirt with hollow points you could find the round just under the surface in the gopher hole it made, I guess that is what you get with a large bore ammo. To specialized, and only 7 rounds in the clip.
