It is already changing politics substantially. Energy is very much in the political agenda right now.

People will complain about the way UK reserves were managed. poroduction was maximized in 90's, a period of low oil price (to which uk production contributed).

UK oil is expensive to produce, about 10$ per barrel. Much of it was exported at 15$ - not much profit.

And now, the country has depleted its reserves and must import 75$ oil.

it's hard to imagine a dummest way to use a country's natural reserves.

How much do you think these shortages of a formerly abundant supply are behind the blair announcement just this week? Is it 'the economy, stupid' or is it 'the war, stupid' that is the main driver in his resignation?

On a worse scale, it almost happened with the American Bison and did happen with the Passenger Pigeon. Do you really think capitalistic business has any concern about conservation?

No. But this case is still a caricatural one. The governement made every possible incitation for the companies to deplete the reserves as quickly as possible.

for exemple, they could have delay and soften the peak by opening less acreage for exploration at once.
