The post-peak oil, post-housing bust economy is already driving most crazy, and we won't even get to the food riot stage for maybe two more years.

Forgive me if this has been posted. http://apnews1.iwon.com//article/20061015/D8KP09580.html
What do you on Peak Oil think of this? Did the government over react in this instance? Words are not actions. The penalty for simply saying something seems like it could have been very high. What are your thoughts.

Quote:
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Upset by the war in Iraq, Julia Wilson vented her frustrations with President Bush last spring on her Web page on MySpace.com. She posted a picture of the president, scrawled "Kill Bush" across the top and drew a dagger stabbing his outstretched hand. She later replaced her page on the social-networking site after learning in her eighth-grade history class that such threats are a federal offense.

It was too late.

Federal authorities had found the page and placed Wilson on their checklist. They finally reached her this week in her molecular biology class.

This is a small section of the article. I posted the general idea of the content for people who do not want to click the link.

I'm allowed to say Bush is an @$$hole and that I disagree with parts of his foreign policy.

I can say that he has bad taste in ties, that his wife looks like worn out street hooker, that his daughters are rampant adulteresses.

I can even say that the United States would be better off if he had been assassinated several years ago. Evil or Very Mad

But I can not and should not be allowed to make death threats.

We have to trade some liberty in exchange for security and I strongly believe that death threats cross the line.

I know that this teenager posed essentially no threat to the president but the secret service was right to investigate.

This is hardly an example of the government going too far in fighting terrorism (or whatever you wish to call it).

I am no apologist for the Bush Administration, but I don't wish him dead. I mean, come on, do we really want President "Secret-Undisclosed-Location" Cheney? Smile

I agree that death threats should be looked into. I also agree that death threats should not be allowed as a example of free expression. (sorry if I gave that impression at all)

Tyler is correct, IMO.

With a HS girl, just call her on the phone, say, "this is the SS, call us back at this Federal Number.

When she calls back, tell her she can't threaten the President.

That's it. No big deal. She'll s____ her pants and that's the end of it.

That's the way a sane government would do it. But the pending police state needs to overdo all reactions and impose the maximum amount of fear into the citizens so none will consider dissent.

Admittedly, death threats are beyond the absolute freedom of expression. But the post 911 fear mongering and over reaction to minor threats also go too far.

This is just typical in our Politically Correct world. The authorities overreact (hugely), makes massive threats, bully and intimidate a teenager who made a mistake and as long as she is properly cowed (and submissively cries) can go back to her little world.

There just is no such thing as a civilized conversation anymore

Making death threats is going to far, no matter who the target is. I have been the target of death threats from a former crazy girlfriend. I reported it to the police and she was investigated. In other words, all citizens of the US have the right to live in a terror free environment, free from death threats, ect.

I think there is a difference between serious or possibly serious death threats, and this which was clearly a joke.

But you are allowed to issue death threats regarding foreign leaders?

BTW, isn't having capital punishment "a death threat"?

4859 posts, 4859 irritating rhetorical questions.

I thought the Secret Service's response was very measured and reasonable. They impressed the seriousness of the matter on her but deleted the file so as not to ruin her life. I thought everyone knew by now that making death threats against US presidents was a serious business.

For Fark' sake there's enough wrong with America that you should be able to come up with some legitimate criticisms instead of petty crap like this.

The S.S. agents told Kirstie that they were investigating her daughter’s role in setting up a MySpace Web page. In particular, they were troubled because the Web page included the creation of art (pictured above) that the agents felt was extremely threatening to the life of the President of the United States.

The agents told Kirstie that since the art included the words, “Kill Bush,” and since it was accessible to anyone on the Internet, there was a very strong likelihood that someone—possibly a terrorist from a foreign country—might see the image and be inspired to act upon it. Thus, they reasoned, even if Julia only meant to be funny, the art put the President in grave danger. Many people are
