Note to moderating team: if this is placed incorrectly, please move it to the proper location

*edited version*

Clean Energy NOW! is a young organization combining the conventional ways of promoting clean energy with the new possibilities given to us by modern technology.

The aim of this organization is to bring together all those groups that, for whatever reason they may have, feel the current energy-policy is not sustainable and feel the need to switch to a more sustainable, renewable, clean, energy policy.

This includes saving energy (tips for at home) and promoting the use of alternatives, such as solarpanels, and windmills, both at micro-scale (at home) and at macro-scale (huge plants).

Whether you believe PO is going to kill us all, unless we switch, or whether you think climate change will do so, or some other reason... it does not matter.

If you believe we need clean energy, then we want you to be a part of the team.

For the website we are currently setting up, we are looking for expert thinkers/writers, who are capable of writing objective, fact-based articles. We are not looking for alarmist conspiracist, who write in such a style that the target audience (those who are not convinced already) is driven away.

Also, we will be looking for news-submitters, pretty much on the same criteria.

Articles will be longer writing, analytic and sometimes opinion. News are current events happening in the world (of course, with a focus on clean energy).

When interested, please contact me at contact at clean-energy-now.org (hope this is spam-proof) with a small introduction of who you are, where you come from and what you do etc.

Thank you for reading this post.

thank you billp for pointing out the difference between writers and thinkers.

If you have a section for "America needs to stop consuming such disgustingly massive amounts of energy in such a frivilous manner and start investing the energy where it will bring future returns for all of the life forms that must call this planet home" then I'm interested.

Sounds like the target audience is the average mainstream American, correct?

Just make sure to not refer to them as "sheeple".

lol

well, that would go under the "energy saving" section I think.

My target audience is pretty much everybody on this planet, but the US is a large group indeed Smile

Ok, well I'll write an article on the topic of conservation (sans sheeple) and send it to you. Probably later today, I'm heading out with my photographer now to take pictures of failed housing starts. I live in the Detroit area. eusa_boohoo

How much will you pay me to be optomistic and happy-faced? You want to suck my soul, you need to compensate me. right?

I can give you furrowed-brow 'concern' for about $50k. For that kind of money I'll spin all sorts of alternative energy schemes. You get biofuels first and foremost (because I have an advanced degree in agriculture), you get the latest thin-film amorphous PV, you get wave generators. Hell I'll even through in clean breeder reactors.

I can work up a 'concerned punditry' routine for maybe $125k. You dress me up in the right suits, keep my hair trimmed, and staff my office with a pretty interns and researchers and I'll have ADM and Merrk eating out of your hand. Hey, I'll eat those doomers for breakfast. I'll quote CERA. I'll rub reserve-growth in their faces. I'll convince them of tesla coils, black-light, cold fusion. Free energy! Hey I'll also give a you a scientific fantasy-free fun future replete with hydrogen economy, hybrid hemis, plug-in prius, Hypercars (tm), and all sorts of fancy hooey.

Now you pay me anything less then, say $25k you get 'we're so Fark. you might as well forget about it.'

As you can see, CleanEnergy, you've come to the wrong place.

Most of us here aren't into Happy Meals.

The fact that one person decides to ridicule the whole idea does not really impress me. On every forum, there is always someone who just likes to act like... well..that

And rhm...what do you mean with "We are not into Happy Meals" ? Is that some sort of slang I don't get?

As Energyhog implied - energy conservation is the most fundamental principle of environmentalism.

What new possibilities do you speak of. Wind power has been around since Methusalah and Solar pV for 3 decades at least. I hear alot about clean coal technology but I won't get excited until it comes to a powerplant near me. Good luck anyway, any idea is probably better than none at all. I can give you a recipe for homemade jam and pumpkin soup and an article extolling the virtues of leaf beet.

Welcome. Of course we need clean energy. There are, unfortunately, some rather severe complications...

Spend some more time browsing this site, and others such as the Oil Drum and Energy Bulletin. The problems we're facing are quite complex.

I think it's great that you're trying to do something. The request for writers implies that you have a goal. You say your goal is to bring together these disparate groups; but I ask, for what ultimate purpose? What will be accomplished by these groups once they're in touch? If the goal is simply to raise awareness of our hydrocarbon dependence, and its relation to current environmental issues, then cool, go for it. If the goal is to actually get us to stop using hydrocarbons, and instead switch to ethanol and wind turbines, all while continuing our current economy, population and lifestyle, then again I recommend further reading. Nothing wrong with moving in that direction; but there are issues.

Madpaddy: I am speaking of new technologies enabling us to reach people we would not have reached earlier.

Goal:
- step 1: Awareness
- step 2: Action

simple as that.

Do the technologies actually power things or are they marketing tools to enlist non-believers into your new paradigm? If they are just marketing tools (and don't actually make energy), then what do you do with the folks who have been new-paradigmized? They will need that 'new' energy.

What is the action of step 2? Is there a step 3?

Ask yourself... if you were to go out and -say- buy solarpanels...why would you do that?

Because you believe you need to.

We will explain to people that they need clean energy. Not just because of PO, but for other reasons as well (climate change.. Reducing dependancy on imports from instable regions etc).

As soon as we have gotten people over that barrier (the barrier of not-knowing they need to) we will help them find the information they need to act.

Yes, people should act themselves. I do not believe in some governing body telling people what to do, I believe in educating people and trusting that they will make the right decisions.

I know many in the PO community do not think that way, and -especially after LATOC- the common perception is that people are just gonna smash eachothers head. Perhaps, but perhaps we can avoid that. Either way, I am not gonna sit on the railroadtrack looking at the train speeding my way, I will do what I can to change the way things go.

And with this group, I believe we CAN indeed make a difference.

A small difference, perhaps. But still, a difference. A difference which, combined with many others, may lead us to a future which is brighter than the one some people believe lies ahead.

Sure you can educate people. But then you have to tell them they won't have air conditioning in the summer or their daughter can't blowdry her hair--ever. they will walk away.

Ok, here’s my conservation article for clean energy…

Step 3: Conservation
Dec. 3, 2006

As you may already know, the human population has grown quite large over the past thousand years and is now well above what scientists refer to as the “carrying capacity” of the earth. This means that without the technology and fossil fuels that humans currently utilize there would be many people that would die.

Hopefully this is already obvious to you. What is probably not so obvious is that the burning of fossil fuels has caused not only the depletion of the ozone layer but also the buildup of a layer of smog surrounding the entire earth. This layer of smog causes many health problems for people, especially those living in highly populated cities where the smog is densest. As we burn more fossil fuels in an unclean manner the smog has become worse, to the point that it is estimated to be blocking up to 3% of the heat from the sun.

This may seem like a bad thing but ironically this smog has taken the place of the ozone layer that we destroyed. Without this layer of smog the earth would rapidly heat up, drastically changing the environment of the earth and most likely causing the death of many, if not all people.

This is why a scientist from India that I recently listened to on NPR referred to the burning fossil fuels as being similar to a “heroin addiction.” For those of you that are unfamiliar with the addiction, it works like this; once you start using heroin, if you stop, you will die. The human body has adjusted to the heroin use and becomes dependent on it.

Like heroin, if we stop burning fossil fuels, we will most likely perish in fairly short order. Likewise, if the fossil fuels we are burning stop emitting the life saving smog into the atmosphere then similar effects can be expected. In order to remedy the situation this scientist suggested that a shield be built in space that would block out the sun.

Now at first this may sound like a good idea but rest assured this sun blocking shield would be controlled by the most evil people on earth. What, did you think that nice guys finish first all of a sudden?

Don’t want to bow down before us? No problem, we’ll just cutoff your sun for a few years and see how you’re feeling about bowing down then. It would be a lot easier than spending trillions of dollars sending armies into hostile territories for years at a time.

Could there be other solutions rather than blocking the sun? Sure, but no one has thought of any so the best option we have right now is to hope that we can find enough stuff to burn to keep our sun-shading-smog-cloud hanging just above our heads a little longer, like a junky looking for that next fix. Luckily we have plenty of heroin, I mean fossil fuels, to keep the party going but what about our kids, where will they get materials to burn?

Hopefully by then someone has thought of a way to artificially create a sunshade that is not controllable by any one person or group of people. Once we have that problem solved we can get back to figuring out the next highest priority; population control.

The way the pollution problem started in the first place was that there was so much energy for the people to use that the population flourished like a herd of deer in a warm winter. The herd of people have had hundred’s of “warm winters” and the population is now running rampant, consuming and destroying everything it can get its hands on.

At this point conservation means nothing because if one person conserves then the extra energy is available to keep other people alive. This extra available energy allows the population to grow further yet which means that even more energy will be used and so on and so on until there just isn’t enough energy available or a good old fashion plague rolls through and puts the population in check.

So what do you do? Well the answer is simple; control the population. The implementation; difficult but China has had some success with population control.

So now that we’ve got the heat from the sun under control and the population under control it’s time to talk conservation.

Conservation is a tough topic because it is a matter of opinion. It is undeniable that some amount of damage will be done to the earth in order for a human being to live. The question is; what amount of damage is acceptable?

The best answer I have come up with is that a sustainable amount of damage is acceptable. Sustainable means that the method of survival could go on infinitely. This is possible because the environment repairs itself; plants grow back, animals reproduce, trees clean the air, soil is replenished with nutrients, etc.

To figure out the details of how exactly to live sustainably will take quite a bit of time but I promise that by the time we have figured out the sun blocking problem and the population control problem, the sustainable living problem will be a walk in the park.
