How did you find peakoil.com?

My name is Greg Ellis. I'm an American who has lived in Japan for nine years, and seeing the political, economic and environmental future of America as being dim and dangerous and not wanting to continue living in Japan, I applied to immigrate to Canada, the visa for which I have received. I plan to move to London or Toronto (depending on jobs) Ontario in April, where I will being the workshops and classes on the weekends and holidays to acquire the pre-oil skills in hand-tool building, wagon & wheel building, blacksmithing, etc.

I found this site because one of the moderators on the Post Carbon (London) informed me that my posts (topics related to the content outlined in Kunstler and others) ran counter to their "values and mission." He kindly introduced me to this forum, where political correctness would not stifle peoples' ability to theorize, discuss and prepare for ALL possible futures and contingencies, and not just the ones that agree with our perfect models of the world and how we think it SHOULD be.

I must at least be thankful for the reference to this site, and so I wish that group the best in their ideological zeal.

I honestly can't remember the full story. I thing I had been reading the ASPO site for a couple months and then I checked the ".com" version to see who had it and found this site. I can't remember what led me to ASPO though - probably googled after reading something.

I first found dieoff.com, then the discussion group connected to that, then Life After the Oil Crash and ASPO and then PO.com. I love this thing. I have been peak oil aware for about 5 years and at first I was dying to talk to people, but nobody knew what I was talking about. It's hard to talk to people who have none of the background on peak oil. This forum gives me a place to talk to people who know what's going on. I feel like peak oil is a key to understanding politics and world events. It's the place to be to talk about this stuff. Thanks!

I really don't remember how I found this site, or even how I found out about Peak Oil. I've been researching energy issues for years, so I'm sure I must have read something about PO at one point and kept it in the back of my mind. Then a year or so ago I probably googled it (I google a lot), and found myself here. This is the only forum I visit anymore, having just resigned from another preparedness-type forum where I got sick of the Christian rightwing nationalist "America should rule the world" bullshit.

I'm well aware of its strangling level pf PC. It nauseates me, but I'm thinking 20, 30 and 40 years down the road. That liberal fad will disappear when the shyte hits the fan, but the rest will remain. And what is the rest?

-Largest body of fresh water in the world alongside Siberia

-Water tables outside the urban and intensive agricultural areas that aren't depleted like in America

-Some of the largest stands of old-growth left in the world; if natural gas, coal and nuclear run out or there is a crisis, what do you think people will use for cooking and heating? Human dung?

-Far enough north that the malaria and other mosquito-born diseases moving from Cent Am to North America won't ravage the population in increasingly-mild winters

-A population 1/10th the size of America's

-despite-

-Being geographically larger than America

-Universal health care, which despite the propaganda of corporatists is doing just fine thank you (and they are streamlining to reduce wait times for common surgeries, so take that)

-which means-

-I and my family don't have to suffer unnecessarily with no or poor coverage like in America (whether health care as we know it disappears, I dunno, but until then, single-payer is working just fine in Canada)

There are others. Of course, Americans could just up and move north and take whatever they wanted with a population of 300 million, but little old me can't counter that, other than by moving further north (which is warming!)

So, yea, I hate those damned identity politics Liberals and NDP, but I hate the corporatist big-oil Conservatives just as much. I'm just going to do my thing, learn my skills and see what we see.

That said, I'm a died-in-the-wool American who loves his country and his country's heritage (up to a certain era). I get teary eyed listening to writings of the founding fathers, I have biographies of Washington and Lincoln and read on the founding principles of the American Revolution, etc. etc.

BUT, I cannot in good conscience expose my children (who are also American...and Japanese....and soon to be Canadian) to the very real and probable dangers that will behalf my fellow Americans and the family I have down there. I decided to immigrate to Canada more for their futures and those of my grandchildren than out of personal taste. I don't like running from a fight, and there's a fight of the century down South that will decide how much pain Americans will suffer in the near future. I hate to miss it, but being a father now, my prime obligation is to wife and kids.

There may be some slight advantages to Canada, the main one being a low population density (but it should also be noted that a large portion of the country is basically uninhabitable, so raw density figures shouldn't be taken at face value---plus the gov't is doing everything they can to transfer the excess populace of Chindia and Europe over to Canada). The health care system may be a bonus, though I'm not convinced it's as wonderful as American liberals like to think. I lived there for a year and can't say as I was blown away---matter of fact, I moved back to the US at the first opportunity. I have the option of emigrating there if I want, but I don't. Not my cup of tea. Best thing I can say about Canada is they have good cable TV (best of US, UK, and Canadian shows). And the people are generally friendly, in a superficial Midwest kind of way.

But as I said, good luck with your plans. Whatever floats your boat. There are plenty of Canucks here who will point out every little flaw of the US while blindly singing the glories of Oh Canada.....

I expressed my consern about future and global warming to my very good friend. He told me to read about PO and so I did. It's been a year now and I'm still collecting more info to get prepared mentally. This site I found throught google (i guess) while searching new data about PO.
People who are already conserned about the way things are going in this world are easier to get to know about PO. Still most of the eyes and eyes out there are sealed from the horrible facts.

Like so many others, I found this site with Google. The discussion forums seemed to be lively and visited by people who had done in-depth research into the subject, so I decided to register and stick around.

Found this board through a Google search.

I'm a PO newbie. I was completely unaware of PO until 3 days ago when I watched "A Crude Awakening". After viewing, I began scouring the internet in a vain attempt to disprove the documentary. 3 days of pouring through everything I could find regarding PO has had the complete opposite result and removed my blinders further.

In the past 3 days I've at times wished I had my ignorance back.

This is gonna suck.
