At least according to google. Check this out. Apparently, google now shows pictures of the big easy that were taken BEFORE Katrina.

Story

I guess New Orleans was never destroyed afterall. See? It's all liberal propaganda cooked up to make the President look like an incompotent boob.

We are knee-deep in conspiracies.

My favorite conspiracy is the one where the government convinces everyone that it's ok to live below sea level because the government built levees to keep out the water.

Many suckers fell for that one.

Interesting thing about Google and censorship. I have the Google Toolbar installed and on Friday I was searching for recipes using blackened chicken. The Google Toolbar fills in suggestions for you as you type--it's a nice feature to fill in phrases that you may not have thought of. Anyway, notice that Google is race-sensitive. I typed in "blackened chicken", but once I got to the "k" (hence, "black"), the autocomplete stopped working. I thought it was a bit ridiculous.

Unfortunately, the seaside condo builders are laughing all the way to the bank - about every 3-7 years, in fact. angry4

I don't understand what you mean about the 3-7 years. What does that refer to?

Sorry, I went from talking about NOLA to living in coastal areas in general, and failed to mention it. Whether it's levees or providing flood insurance to the uninsurable, it's all an abomination of the free market.
Speaking of the folly of gov't issued flood insurance, Dauphin Island, AL in particular has been rebuilt something like 10 times over due to hurricane damage (aka every "3-7 years"). This is more angering to me than being dependent upon the government for levee protection.

Just my libertarian side coming out. Wink

About this time a year ago, I visited Sacramento - in the hotel, on the TV, there was a neat channel, had all this stuff about the history of the town, and about how it was built, etc.

Sacramento was essentially claimed from the river delta using levees. Originally areas were levee'd off to keep cattle in, stuff like that, then people started "making" more land to farm, etc. The upshot is that the natural state of downtown Sacramento is.... 15 feet underwater! And yes levee maintenance is a big issue there too - burrowing animals, levees made of old wood and other crap from the late 1800s so they have unstable cores, etc.

All towns built on rivers seem to have this issue. The spring melt will be coming soon on the fraser river and the news is filled with stories about the towns working on the levies because we expect it to be a big flood year. Right now it's all about the politicians getting some face time as they throw money at them. Noone is mentioning that perhaps the regular flooding of the area is what made it such great farm land and having ripped up the fields for houses was the stupidest thing we've ever done...

Back to the google thing. If you go east to pass christian you can see the line where the miracle restoration stopped

to the left you have beach front houses and filled pools. To the right you have rubble and foundations.miracle occurs

Ha! Cool link. Thanks Strider.

I found the demarcation line. On the left side the pools are blue and sparkly. On the right side the pools are green and full of slime next to a foundation.

Are blue roofs better for the heat? We have almost none up here but they appear pretty common down there. I see some obvious tarps but there are a bunch of complete roofs.

I used to be skeptical over the theory that the levees were blown with explosives... until I learned that they were indeed blown up in previous hurricanes that hit New Orleans. The lesson is, never be too skeptical.

Events happening in a big city will have more profound effects than if you live in the country. You don't have to be too bright to see not to move to a big city. Some person recently asked if he should move to LA. I would not.

What if they knew it was going to break and they had to make a choice which direction?
