For a minute there I thought I had to get off my couch, when all the while the fact is we don't have to do anything much but keep things afloat for just a few decades more! In fact, we'd best shut up about PO, because if our offspring finds out we knew about it all along, they'll turn and wring our necks come 2036!

So much for Blair's "green" posturing, today the Independent revealed that UK's carbon dioxide emissions reached 10-year high, link here.
Quote:
Emissions of the principal greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide, from power stations, motor vehicles and homes, amounted to 560.6 million tonnes last year, 6.4 million tonnes higher than the 2005 figure. The increase of 1.15 per cent means that Britain's emissions are now at the highest level since Labour came to power a decade ago, nearly 3 per cent above 1997.

And we should reduce emissions by 12 per cent by 2010. I'm not holding my breath.
Then again, when most people is unwilling to change their lifestyle, this is hardly surprising (article)

Part of our problem in recent decades is the tendency to engage in spin....and Europe is the prime culprit when it comes to smoke and mirrors.

I reiterate my position again in here....its Europe I would be wary of....it's where the power that is behind the global mischief we call capitalism resides and its where the grandest degree of mind control resides.

When you get to talking to your average European, you really get the sense of the crisis we are in....on the one hand they will extol the virtues of sustainability ad nauseum, but on the other, they go on blissfully slurping at the pig bin.

America may be wilfully cornucopian with an almost childlike single mindedness, the Europeans though take self delusion to another level....super spin....in the best tradition of the constant search for the super man...whatever that version of the locust is.

In this area, statistics can be anything you want them to be.

As for European smoke and mirrors... sure, we're good at it. The elites of certain nations, as exemplified by the UK, have long taken a perverse delight in setting new standards in subtlety and evasiveness. Yes, Minister accurately portrayed a political system in which career progression depended on the extent of one's understatement and indirectness. It's just that in that past, this was pure performance, a mask behind which to hide a devious purpose. The current generation of politicians never grasped that the tradition was a game. Now it is adopted at face value as the way the job is done, as part of one's core professionalism. They used the tool of manipulation on themselves and believed their own lies. The fools.

Really it's every bit as tragic as Americans and their crude replica. The end result is the same, people twisting data, burying inconvenient findings, believing their own soothing rhetoric, no longer secretly understanding.

All it will take is a really deep economic recession or a major disruption in oil supply to bring the UK back in line with their obligation to reduce CO2 emissions under the Kyoto Treaty.

It's kind of like asking a woman what her weight is when you've never seen her. If she cares about what you think and she's insecure about it, she'll lie, if she doesn't care, she probably won't lie and if she simply wants you to go away, she'll tell you she's as big as an elephant! It's the same with nations; a lot of nations really care about being seen as caring about the environment.

The real problem with the UK, Canada, and other nations failing to live up to their Kyoto obligations is that when climate change starts to really be bad, and everyone finally is serious about a meaningful treaty to reduce CO2 emissions, another treaty will be very difficult to do because the UK, Canada, EU etc. have already shown they aren't trustworthy.

Agreed. Take the second Republican Presidential debate in South Carolina a couple days ago as an example. Rudy Giuliani got the greatest applause of the night when he attacked Ron Paul for claiming that America needs to take some responsibility for 9/11 due to its imperious treatment of others in foreign lands.

If a substantial percentage of our populace feels we should just "stay the course" while at the same time seeing no need to seriously examine how we got ourselves and the world into our present mess, then perhaps Plantagenet is right about how America, and likely other countries as well, are not to be trusted.

Michigan GOP leader wants Paul barred from future debates.

Countries who sign treaties accept certain treaty obligations. Good intentions don't count.

Its a simple fact that the UK, Canada, and most EU countries are failing to live up to their treaty obligations under the Kyoto Treaty.

I haven't given up hope. Maybe they just need another few decades to find their integrity and to keep their word.
