Eurovision Song Contest - how much longer?

ESC = Eurovision Song Contest

Last week an Eurovision Song Contest was held here in Helsinki. To host one costs alot of time, energy and money. I was wondering there might not be many of these spectacles left before things go bad. Even with plenty of energy it's hard to organize one because of the money it consumes. Of course the Eurovision could be downgraded to a radio show, then it would more like singin actually that matters than circus freak show on stage, like Ukraine this year and Lordi, which won last year.

I think it will last a long time (it was going when I was at school (over 30 years ago!) They will have to scale it back, and there would be fewer people travelling to it, which should make it cheaper to host.

Sports and the entertainment business in general will take a beating in the coming years ahead.

Yet the basic premise why songs are written and football gets played will not change - people love music and people like to sublimate their aggressions and national pride into sports.

Things will be scaled back this much is certain. If societies dont completely tumble then I think we will see sports and hear music and concerts, because that helps keep the masses in line.

What was it that the romans said, all the mob needs is bread and some circus to tide them along... ? I only know this saying in my mother dialect. Smile

Seriously, it will shrivel and die but not immediately and not for the reasons we suspect. Promoters and sponsors will see what a waste of resources it is: where do the winners/participants go, year after year? = oblivion

The Eurovision song contest is a crude display of opportunistic patriotism:

Implications of Peak Oil are massive for the entertainment industry, including the ESC. I think sports are especially vulnerable. We have many leagues of many different sports, nearly all of which travel to games. In fact, the better, more elite the team, the farther and more often they travel...usually by airplane...with entourage...then repeat a few days later for the game. This isn't just professional leagues, but college, high school, and elite "club" sports here in the US.

As part of relocalization, which will be forced on us by economic realities of PO, entertainment will become intensely local...I hope. All that travel and decadent resource use contributes very little of value to our society that could not be gained just as well by staying home. Think local league sports, local bands, dances, etc. I'm anxious for things like this and support local entertainment when I have the option.

I give it 4 years max.

I think even by the next ESC there will be a feeling of insecurity in Europe. What with so many countries facing inflation rises, interest rate rises and unemployment due to unsustainable economies and for ever increasing crude oil prices.

4-5 years the show will be finished.

I think of myself as open to all types of music and do not limit myself to that which is sang in English. However watching Eurovision this year was a trial. I had enough after 1 hr. The music sucked Smile

Some tunes even had similar wording and titles.

The winner in my opinion must have bought the privilege. I would shut this show down ASAP.

I think some people are missing the point of ESC. for the most part its a light hearted song show - you only have to listen to Terry Wogan's commentary to realise that. the silly costumes, bimbi boppy lyrics and the tactical voting all has a certain balck comedy about it. Serbia winning this year with votes from its closest neighbours had a particular irony about it! indeed the ESC could be argued as being a good for allowing countries to offer the olive branch of peace via giving a traditional enemy a point (so long as its not those pesky french!) - may it live forever!

PS On behalf of Great Britain I'd like to apologse for the quality of this years entry - it had no redeeming features......

I love the Eurovision. Ireland has won it 7 times (more than any other country). It spawned Riverdance where we all got to see comely Irish maidens instead of the traditional 22 stone Biddies our women were stereotyped as. In fact Miss World is the only global competition the Irish have ever won. More than all that however, Eurovision inspired the best episode of the greatest comedy series of all time. The Eurosong episode of "Father Ted". Excuse my bias here folks.
