Meanwhile, keep watching for shortage reports, because we should start seeing some sneak in this week, if our doom-o-meter is calibrated correctly.

Global warming 'is three times faster than worst predictions'

Quote:

Global warming is accelerating three times more quickly than feared, a series of startling, authoritative studies has revealed.

They have found that emissions of carbon dioxide have been rising at thrice the rate in the 1990s. The Arctic ice cap is melting three times as fast - and the seas are rising twice as rapidly - as had been predicted.
...
The study, published by the US National Academy of Sciences, shows that carbon dioxide emissions have been increasing by about 3 per cent a year during this decade, compared with 1.1 per cent a year in the 1990s.

The significance is that this is much faster than even the highest scenario outlined in this year's massive reports by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) - and suggests that their dire forecasts of devastating harvests, dwindling water supplies, melting ice and loss of species are likely to be understating the threat facing the world.
...
On the ground, a study by the University of California's National Snow and Ice Data Center shows that Arctic ice has declined by 7.8 per cent a decade over the past 50 years, compared with an average estimate by IPCC computer models of 2.5 per cent.

Holy Jesus...

Certainly this is worth its own thread, Joe. You should start one.

I agree, it is ominous news.

Starvid, what do you say to this?

But the boss of NASA told me it isn't a problem

Who knows?
May be it is better to close our shop fast?
Fast changes may destroy status quo timely enough to prevent even greater damages, which could easily occurr, should we get more time to adapt.
Nature can act swiftly, if under stress.

Along with this bad news, which shouldn't be a surprise to anyone here, if you factor in the lack of general public response and clear declarations from India and China not to expect them to fix anything; I come to the conclusion that we have past the tipping point for resolving global warming as it relates to man's well being.

I believe you will see that the rate of warming is on a logarithmic track.
That too shouldn't be a surprise. As human contributions continue to increase they in turn force the earth to respond in kind. A self-re-enforcing loop.
The large report that came out this year was a compromised statement that portrayed the lowest common denominator of what everyone could agree on. It was the worst kind of lie.

I won't be a bit surprised to see, in 10 years, that whole sections of the US will need to be abandoned.

Who care, what NASA is saying.
Within 25 years they will no longer exist for the reason of lack of funding and infrastuctural collapse.
One of their current solutions to energy crisis is taking He-3 from the Moon to fuel nonexisting reactors.
They are also proposing manufacturing of aluminium and silicon on the Moon by fluorine based approach, which is a plain joke.
Such a waste of taxpayer money...

Guess they are gonna need to ask the current residents on the moon if tearing up that environment is ok.

So I did.

I think, it will eventually prove to be a bell shaped curve, albeit there may well be not many advanced life forms witnessing Peak GW and pleteau surrounding it.

I agree, last IPCC report was unethusiastic, means dull - business as usual with cosmetic changes and with some care is still seen as solution.

Hey now look on the bright side. With all this experience with global warming we are getting here on Earth, we can apply that knowledge when we need to terraform Mars and move there.

No, no...
There are no fossil fuels on Mars, neither there is any meaningful amount of oxygen there.
So we cannot repeat our earthly success there.
Such a shame...

There are large amounts of oxygen on Mars, both in the water ice and in the iron oxides. We won't have any problem breathing there, inside well insulated and sheilded shelters that is.

It wouldn't matter if the rate of increase was 30 times faster than the worst earlier prediction, or 300 times, or 3000 times. We'd still keep doing exactly what we're doing now: nothing.

Not only are we not doing anything, we're actually continuing to make things worse!

Our inability to respond to the threat of global warming, from the time this threat was first identified to today, is the strongest proof yet that we're doomed.
