Ok...so the bunker I chose is 25' long x 8' diameter with a 3' manhole entrance at one end and a 6" vent at the other. I have posted some pics below I took during installation. It has a small concrete pad on top now. It is entirely pest proof.
It holds quite a bit.
If you go this way PRELOAD THE CULVERT with 4x8 plywood before they seal it...to make shelves with by straddling the tube inside with 2x6s (turned lengthwise) and 1/2" ply wood on top.
The shelf will be in compression with the insides of the tube as you load weight onto it. This saves space at the bottom to sleep or store more goods.
It keeps a constant temp around 78 degrees year round. So food will stay for a while.
It was aboud $5000 to fabricate and deliver and $3000 to dig the hole and put a concrete pad above it.
I spent $200 to have someone make a lock apparatus - it is two anchors at either side of the manhole cover sunk into the concrete with a 4 foot steel strap that straddles the cover and locks to the anchors.
Someone would need a torch to get in. It took 30 days from order to ground to complete. Pacific Corrugated Pipe is who I used, but there are others I am sure. Pacific Corrugated Pipe

This begs a lot of questions. I hope this is not a solution in isolation. Are you located in a neighorhood, small town, or far out in the country. I see electric service. That means you have neighors. Are they good neighbors you have already built a community with? Because if not, you are screwed from every direction. They think you are a nutcase.
What is the pipe for? WWIII? Plague? How many wet winters will that thing last? Who or what do you expect to hide from? When do you come out? What will be different when you come out? How will you know when to go back in? What happens if the folks you are hiding from find out about the tube? Can't they outwait you? What happens when the food runs out and you have to leave?
I would build this only after I learned to farm, garden, raise livestock, mend fences, weld, repair machinery, hunt, fish, and make nice to my neighbors. _________________

Nice. I've thought about something like that but I question the life expectancy of the pipe in my ultra wet climate. It looks like you're in desert territory so no worries there. Any pictures of the inside? _________________ shame on us, doomed from the start

There are other reasons than a nuke attack to have one of these especially in a desert climate you will keep cool in one of these if the power goes out. _________________ It's a cold cold world when a man has to pawn his shoes. |

I have some around..I will post if I find. Yes I am in the desert - this is located on an off grid parcel...the neighbors are gun carrying, horseback riding, garden growing, animal slaughtering...stay the F' out of my backyard folk...so we will get along just fine.

Yes Uncovering Truths - it is really a root cellar, but bunker sounds more doomerish;)

Pea Sea - getting 223 ammo is getting harder and harder, but in the words of Matt Savinar..."I am heavily armed"...eh matty?

Well Pstarr - you ask all the good questions...as usual...truth is...this is my first die off so it is OJT. If we see each other on the other side we can compare notes on how to get through the next die off...eh?

Hey Frank - the soil is great for gardening...nice mix of clay and loam with some river rock. Smells great and clumps when you squeeze it. _________________ Question:How was Amerika brought down?

Better then mine. I've got this sand crap that is heavy is hell. Plants don't seem to mind, but it seems to dry out real fast. _________________ "Oil is going up because we use too much oil, and the capacity to replace reserves is dwindling"

Dude, nice job!
It's too bad you had to behave like a feral animal over at LATOC. I'm going to post a link to this thread over there. _________________ http://www.peakoil.org |

You could even pile a couple old tires or some sand over the entrance and I bet no one would even know it's there... |

I got a "MASH" tent off ebay for around $1200 and it is now over the top of it.
The neighbors know it is there and I suspect they know what it is for.
At some point you have to show your hand slightly...
I am looking at a third and forth location to do a similar get up only on a smaller scale in case the zombies overrun this location.
I have picked out sniper posts and access to this location is very limited that a few junked cars cannot block.
The community is a "lock and load" type...and this location is shielded from nuc fallout patterns and blasts as well as the water table is very shallow.
Then again I may get smeared by a drunk on my way home tonight. _________________ Question:How was Amerika brought down?

I really like the way you think. This is EXACTLY what I want to do. Multiple bug out locations, all undeground with hidden caches of supplies.
It's a damn shame you had to act like a feral beast over at the LATOC forum. _________________ http://www.peakoil.org |
