If "it's bunker time" why the fark do you care about the price of gold? You evolved some enzyme that lets you digest the stuff?

This forum is so slow compared to others, it drives me crazy sometimes. It would be nice to be able to browse the forum without having to wait for up to 1 minute for a page to load sometimes. Is it just me?

No. Me too. 10 seconds to load this page...that's quick compared to the usual time of 45 to 60 seconds.

The site actually seems to be running much faster than usual today.

I think the problem isn't so much the bandwidth, but a backend database (MySQL?) that's creaking under the strain. It costs thousands for something like SQL Server to connect to the internet (using the per processor licencing). A bigger server would help, but there are limits to how much speed improvement you can get.

Are there any other free/cheap databases out there that the site could be ported to that offer better performance for the ever growing site? Would it be possible to have an archive section sitting on a different DB server?

Edit: Apparently PostgreSQL is a good choice. Alternatively, they could delete all Monte's posts and get the DB back to a manageable size Very Happy

Yeah, it doesn't seem too bad today on my end. But definitely slower then most sites.

Good point, but the problem is there doesn't seem to be an easy way to donate. I don't know if throwing money at the problem is the best solution for the bandwidth problem, but I've heard this come up before.

I was donating money before using paypal via the donate link, but for the last month the module hasn't been activated. I think the last month before the donate module was taken down, there was about $60 donated just in that month.

I wish peakoil.com would...

Aaron, do you know which queries are the worst culprits, or is it just a general slowness due to db size and user numbers (and possibly hardware spec)?
