For a minute there I thought I had to get off my couch, when all the while the fact is we don't have to do anything much but keep things afloat for just a few decades more! In fact, we'd best shut up about PO, because if our offspring finds out we knew about it all along, they'll turn and wring our necks come 2036!

Is it just me or is the quality of writing going down here?

Maybe it's just me. I've read a lot about PO and I don't feel like I'm being confronted with many new ideas these days. If people have some new ideas or new data to share, I'm willing to read them. Otherwise, I'm reluctant to read the rehashing of the same conflicts over and over again. Also, the off-topic posts are getting on my nerves.

Anyway, what I propose is a rating/user moderation system like that of kuro5hin or Slashdot. I like the finer granularity of kuro5hin's rating system -- this avoids the rating inflation that takes place on Slashdot.

Also, it might make sense to have separate ratings for different aspects of each post. For example, we could have a "writing quality" rating, an "on-topic" rating, an "informative" rating, an "imaginative" rating, and a "nice" rating (for conflict-averse readers). Ratings of 1 to 5 could be used as on Slashdot. The rating for each category would be the mean of user ratings, accurate to, say, two decimal places.

Readers could then filter on ratings for each category and avoid low-scoring posts.

Thoughts?

I like the idea. I'm finding astrology and all kinds of irrelevancies in the forum

Well the number of complaints about the quality of writing going down has grown in proportion to the site's popularity.

I like the moderation systems on kuro5hin and Slashdot too. I've even considered running the site on the slashcode project. However, the rating system mods for phpBB aren't that great. Plus there are a ton of posts already created which have no rating. In the in short term, a moderation system might be workable only for the front page new items.

Few new people search the archives to see what has already been discussed. Repetitive posts are on the rise. I try to keep the forum's front pages on topic as much as possible, but like admin says, the site is growing and the quality gets diluted.
