Light Sweet Crude Oil

Member Quotes
I think this is the beginnings of an economy based on perpetual growth and fossil fuel energy running headlong into geological energy constraints. Basically I see an undulatory downward path for the rest of my life. From here out, I think any rallies in our economic condition are going to be met with spiking commodity prices that knock us right back down.

Of course, we all knew this, but it's still a good piece:

Why Dick changed his mind

Quote:
In a widely viewed You Tube clip, taken from a C-Span interview conducted in 1994, Dick Cheney argues persuasively that the United States was right not to topple Saddam Hussein during the first Gulf War.

He cites the potential disintegration of the country and the risk of American casualties as good reasons for the decision not to take Baghdad.

So what was it that changed his mind by the turn of the century?

An acute awareness of impending peak oil.

In 1994 Dick wasn't in a position to directly profit from it.

Dick Cheney believes in Peak Oil?

"Conservation may be a sign of personal virtue, but it is not a sufficient basis for a sound, comprehensive energy policy." -- Dick Cheney

Quote:
In the late 1990s Iraqi oil production averaged about 2 million barrels per day, but with the necessary investment it was thought its reserves could support three times that output.

A lie. Iraqi oil production peaked in 1979 at 3 million barrels per day and has been in decline ever since. Iraq can never produce more than that ever. Anyone who believes we went to war in Iraq for 500 thousand to 2 million barrels of oil per day has no clue what is going on.

It is common knowledge that Iraq has the second-largest proven oil reserves in the world, with no less then 112bn barrels, and probable reserves of around 250bn barrels. But why is that Iraqi oil does not account for more than a fraction of global oil supply? In fact Iraq has made no more than 2.5mn b/d of its oil available to the world market for almost 25 years, with the exception of a few spells when exports exceeded that.

And? That also reinforces and confirms my view.

In 1979, the country’s best year, Iraqi oil production averaged roughly 3 million barrels a day. Iraqi officials had set a target of pumping and 3.5 million barrels a day by mid-2006, but that goal was not realized.

You were saying, moron?

Hmm...1979?...Hmm...Now what happened directly after that and all of the subsequent years...Let's look through our history books. There was war. Then more war. Then sanctions that crippled the economy. Then more war. Now why would production be down when those fields are so damn close to the front during those wars and they couldn't receive needed materials or expertise during the sanctions? It just doesn't make sense!

You can deny peak oil all you want. The historical fact is that Iraqi oil production peaked in 1979 at 3 million barrels per day. It's a mystery to me why anyone would invade Iraq for their oil when Saudi Arabia that can produce at least 5 times as much oil is right next door and when we already invaded Iraq for their oil in 1991. Only an idiot would invade Iraq for oil given that Saudi Arabia and Iran which can actually produce oil are right next door. Anyone with a brain who wants to engage in a resource war for oil would go to Saudi Arabia.

Wouldn't Nigeria be a current example of this?

Iraq's untapped oil. No mystery.

Nonsense aside, the sands of Iraq hold oil... lots of it. According to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), "Iraq holds more than 112 billion barrels of oil - the world's second largest proven reserves. Iraq also contains 110 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, and is a focal point for regional and international security issues."

Oh and 1991 wasn't an invasion of Iraq for oil, it was an 'exercise' to 'reinstate' the puppets in Kuwait. <cough, cough..to 'liberate' Kuwait..sorry>

SA has powerful friends, including Bush. Hussein did not. SA would support an attack on Iraq.
