Light Sweet Crude Oil

Member Quotes
I think this is the beginnings of an economy based on perpetual growth and fossil fuel energy running headlong into geological energy constraints. Basically I see an undulatory downward path for the rest of my life. From here out, I think any rallies in our economic condition are going to be met with spiking commodity prices that knock us right back down.

Interesting thread. I think it's important to reemphasize some points others have made.

Good show, old boy!!!

For myself, I think Russia and China will take a pass.

Russia stands to make a fortune. And if all the gulf oil goes off line, they become the worlds sole energy superpower. It appears to me that Russia is playing both sides.

China will dig in, weather the storm, and emerge in a position to snap up all those rebuilding and production contracts that will no longer go to US multinationals. Also, all those dollars they are sitting on will go a long way to outbidding us on what remains of the world export market. It appears that China is also playing both sides.

No, Russia and China will play the "If the enemy is destroying themselves, don't get in the way" card.

The Japanese, on the other hand, are scared shitless . . .

One of the things about arguing against an attack on Iran is that it is so completely militarily, morally, politically, economically, historically, and strategically, wrong. The fact that it can even be considered just shows how f****d we are. Five U.S. generals threatened to quit last September if we attacked Iran.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/iraq/article1434540.ece

We are told the French (and I’m sorry the French are not Europe, the Germans don’t even want to toughen sanctions) are for an attack. So now we have to listen to the French not the generals. I guess they’re French fries again. But if we attack we’ll be French toast.

There are of course diplomatic approaches

http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2007/09/19/3934/

this post has several. He points out that Iran is really not invadible, and that an Iranian bomb would lead to a Saudi bomb. Evidently, when the Mullahs took over they stopped the nuclear program as non Islamic, so they have stopped before. Also diplomatic efforts do not have to end after they build a bomb, Kurdistan gave up its bombs. But the fact that the Bush administration won’t back any European initiatives is just more evidence of what a lot of us fear, which is that they just want to attack Iran, like they just wanted to attack Iraq.

I really don’t believe that there is any chance of stopping Iran from building a bomb by bombing them. If you’re not going to invade, and there is no chance of that, the government of Iran will still be in place. They will be even more determined build a bomb, and will have even better reasons. You might stop them for a while with bombs, but not forever. Countries build nuclear weapons out of fear.

While most Americans have forgotten, Dr. Mohammad Mossadegh, most Iranians haven’t, and many of our problems stem from his removal and our installation of the Shah. That was more than 50 years ago, but we are still paying for it. An unprovoked conventional or nuclear attack might reduce the chances of Iran developing a bomb for a few years, but it would guarantee that in the long run they would develop one.
