And it's about the worst frickin time in world history to join!!!
She talked to me about this three days ago.
I am all for her doing what she she wants, but this one has got me riled. Her rationale is that she's sick of where she works, and wants to get a "different" part-time job for when she starts uni next year, namely the Army or Airforce reserves (more at www.defencejobs.gov.au, look under "Reserves"). This really kicked into gear yesterday as we were invited to the RAAF airshow, the airshow was great, and after seeing what she saw she may be having second thoughts, I hope. The reserves would normally stay in Australia to guard the homeland during a war, but I believe that with whats likely coming, they too would end up in active combat overseas. I don't quite think she's thought about possible world future/s yet.
I'll put it bluntly, I really do not want her to join, pure and simple, for the fact that the ramifications of whats coming may result in her life ending quite abruptly within the next decade or two, something thats keeping me up at night since she mentioned this (and to think that everything was on the up again since a few weeks ago).
How do I say this to her without getting into one hell of an argument or worse? I can normally talk to her about anything at all without a problem, but not sure what I should do here. _________________ "That the cream cannot help but always rise up to the top, well I say, <censored by peakoil.com> floats"

Not to downplay your feelings on the matter but if you want to have a permanent relationship with this woman you would be better off supporting her decision than opposing it. If you are one of the madmax crowd just think how much better off you will both be after she goes through basic training and gets hands on experience with rifles. If things really fall apart familiarity with self defense weapons can mean the difference between life and death. _________________ Oxygen: - An intensely habit-forming accumulative toxic substance. Is she fully PO-aware? If not, I would suggest immediately purchasing "A Crude Awakening: The Oil Crash" (or get your hands on it some other way) and have her watch it. This is so visually powerful and persuasive that many of my naturally skeptical friends who saw it were convinced. Ask her to please postpone any discussion until you have a chance to go over the ramifications with her.

If she wants to improve her skills, let her go to survival camp for few months, and you should go with her, after that you will know if you want to live with her. _________________ The poor complain; they always do,

If you don't agree with what she wants, Get A Different Girlfriend!

I thought those were guys....and if you don't watch it you'll be under one...
I agree with Dinosaurs, Tanada and Skyemoor, but in the end you know your girlfriend (and yourself) and we don't, so it's up to you to decide how to proceed... _________________ "The best thing about the future is that it comes only one day at a time."

If things go badly your girlfriend will end up incorporated into army, then she will go to fight a war, you will be receiving some letters from her (incidentally postman will always bring those exactly at the time when you are busy with a girlfriend of your best friend, who was also sent to fight a war...) until they abruptly stop coming.
That will be a time to find another girlfriend.

I've been blunt on this forum before, about doing a cost/ benefit analysis when it comes to partners. I would dump this chick so fast her head would spin. She's on a Darwinian fast track to personal extinction. Do you want a brain dead dinosaur to be the mother of your children?

Spoke to her on the phone this morning in her break, she won't be doing anything more about it until she gets to speak to me tonight. She's not sure anymore about it, especially after the recent death of another couple of Australian soldiers (thankyou thankyou thankyou Darwin! in a perverted kind of way......), and something tells me she wasn't serious to begin with.
Threadbear:
You know jack-all about her, so just ease off there a bit. I've done that and it's not that bad. She's just been having trouble picking up another job at the moment and AFAIT, this is a last resort thing. I have it from a source very close to the issue, that her current workplace has been giving out bad references to prospective employers in an attempt to keep her on. She's actually one of their best. _________________ "That the cream cannot help but always rise up to the top, well I say, <censored by peakoil.com> floats"

Right, Judgie. I know jack all about her, except for one thing. She wants to join the Department of Offence, knowing that they are backing the U.S and likely engaging in war crimes in Iraq too. If she doesn't realize this, she's willfully ignorant. If she knows this and joins anyway, she's either amoral or immoral. Either way, a rotten choice for a partner. I'd say the same thing about anyone signing on with the Canadian military now that they're engaged in war crimes in Afghanistan. Give your head a shake and dump her.

I'll see how I go tonight. Thanks for also giving me that last bit of ammo I need (re: war crimes). _________________ "That the cream cannot help but always rise up to the top, well I say, <censored by peakoil.com> floats"

Take everything I said and divide it by two. I'm playing a bit of a devil's advocate here, trying to wake people up to the idea that their career choices matter. What they buys matters, how they live...it all matters in the greater scheme of things.

I understand and I'll tell you how it goes. If she's not awake to all of it beforehand, she will be after. We click incredibly well and i'll only consider dumping her if she denies everything I say and goes ahead with it anyway, which I highly doubt, since I know her and what she's like extremely well. As I stated in previous threads, she's somewhat peak aware. Unfortunately she hasn' t gotten far through "Resource Wars" yet, the book i lent her and i'm stressing the point that she must finish it before she even thinks of making a decision. _________________ "That the cream cannot help but always rise up to the top, well I say, <censored by peakoil.com> floats"
