We cannot drill our way out of this oil crisis. Since 2000, oil companies working in the U.S. have doubled the number of wells drilled per year.

Although increased drilling has added new oil to the nation's supply, it has not done so fast enough to offset the terminal decline of existing fields.

We are going to have to import more of our oil. Period.

how many of the Au DFR were sent to Iraq ?

in college, our freshman year, we went on all sorts of field trips to figure which field of engineering to go into.

30 years later, we have a similar program, to educate young people about life in the US military. Gulf War Syndrome, depleted uranium, PTSD, death.

i suggest, if you can do it in a way that she will listen to, letting your GF find out about some of the "fringe benefits" that come with the job.

a friend of mine had a bungled appendectomy and then, a hysterectomy. gave her life to the Army and they f*cked up a simple operation so bad, my friend can't have children.

maybe, let your friend spend time with injured soldiers. sort of like reading Doonesbury. except, real life.

P.S. in the next few days, an Aussie named Mick Fanning will bring the pro surfing World Title home. probably. Cheers for Mick. with Occy looking on, changing of the guard.

So true! I've been trying to convince an engineering friend not to work for a British arms company. He gives me all this BS about science being neutral...

What's alle this fuss about joing (a part of) the army?
"The guy with the gun always has something to eat" right?

You all obviously see the future as a total chaos, so where does being a normal civilian put you ahead of the raging barbarian hordes? If anything, joining some part of the government (especially defense) will put you ahead of this. You'll get to eat, a place to stay, a gun and some useful training. Sure some will get sent to fight of in some foreign countries. But if TS is HTF in your homecountry, im gonna guess the .gov wants to keep some troops at home. And there loads of jobs in the army which do not in the first place require fighting 'on the front line'.

You say you are afraid she might die. Tell me, how in the name of hell, are you gonna protect her from all the people going crazy in your country? You obviously see this scenario happening otherwise there wouldn't be a problem with your gf joining the reserve.

In a doom-scenario as such, what place in civilization is better than the army/police or any other government law enforcement agency? Just keeping a low profile in the country side? Getting in the food lines in the city?

It's illogical to dismiss an army job when you are foreseeing widespread chaos in the near future. Or do you know something we don't?

You best look up my other newish thread in the psychology section. Then you'd understand that once I finish my degree, I will be joining the South Australia Police Force Smile. I do agree with you that the defence forces/police will be good job sectors in which to be employed during the coming storm, but depending on whether you're front line or not re: defence forces.

On another note I really should have updated. I gave her my blessing last week, if she wants to do it, she can. However, she turned right around and said that she's gonna keep looking for jobs in her current job sector, since the army reserves aren't entirely suitable for her in many respects (I convinced her on a few "incompatabilities" she might have). Put plainly, she's no longer joining and it's become a non-issue. I did remind her though that it's unlikely she'll be on the front line, a good thing.

Honestly, if the shite hits the fan, the reserves would likely be retained here in Oz.
