We cannot drill our way out of this oil crisis. Since 2000, oil companies working in the U.S. have doubled the number of wells drilled per year.
Although increased drilling has added new oil to the nation's supply, it has not done so fast enough to offset the terminal decline of existing fields.
We are going to have to import more of our oil. Period.

I saw an interview today on CBC Newsworld with Heather Hiscox. Jimnmy Carter, at age 86 is coherent, thoughtful and engaged with the inteviewer. He has really put a lot of effort ito this new book, and he paints a lot of the background issues as to why the middle eaast struggle will ocntinue ad infinitum., unless social circusmtances are changed expecialy with the Palestinians.
It is a startling contrast to George W. Bush. Bush seems to either unfocused or he is trying to score short verbal javbs, which often don't fit into the context, as if he's been coached on what to say, but poorly coached. Also, at times, Bush seems to fall into a vacant expression. I really wonder wonder if Carter is not more astute right now to be president than is Bush.
I would not be surprised if Carter has written more books in his lifetime than Bush has read in his.

Let our position be absolutely clear: An attempt by any outside force to gain control of the Persian Gulf region will be regarded as an assault on the vital interests of the United States of America, and such an assault will be repelled by any means necessary, including military force.
This, the key sentence of the Carter Doctrine, was written by Zbigniew Brzezinski, President Carter's National Security Adviser.
Serious stuff We tried. Carter did not respond.
We wonder how the Iran matter will play-out.

Essential non-gas-wasting travel, of course!
I plan to stop at Arizona Cholla coal-fired electric generation plant to take some pictures.
I am curious on how they unload coal from trains.
There may be several Sharin [Shirin] Neshats. Or maybe only one?

Yes, she was in Venice Biennal. She is also a political activist, and has made few short movies. Her father Timsar Ali Neshat was the commander of the Imperial guard during the Shah regime and was executed by IRI.

The video is interesting to watch, but even better is to look at the comments. The amount of anger being displayed. I think we're very well into the transition from denial into anger as was said earlier.

Yes, I remember this speech well. It's too bad the Carter was such an ineffective president. Too thoughtful and indecisive; not given to action. _________________ "Modern Agriculture is the use of land to convert petroleum into food."

Must have been a fun place.
Mos, thanks for posting that. That's an interesting speech to listen to, both because of the things he was right about and the things he didn't seem to even be aware of.
The idea of "running out" seemed to be his concern, as opposed to supply simply being unable to keep up with demand. As we all now know, we will never "run out", it's just that eventually everyone will be priced out of the market. The last barrel in the ground would have a price no one could pay; thus, it will never be extracted.
If he had been able to get into his time machine and spend a few days in the present reading all of the research and discussion regarding the corrosive effects of high energy prices on the entire world economy, I'm sure that the tone of that speech would have been a lot more dire. _________________ We're all Big Wave Riders.
