Electricity Crisis in Syria

Quote:
Since early summer 2007, Syria has been suffering from a severe electricity crisis, the worst in many years. Recurring power outages last four to 10 hours a day, and this has obviously affected the lives of Syria's citizens, as well as causing serious damage to the Syrian economy.

A source inside the Moscow Interregional Oil Union said Wednesday that local fuel reserves were down to three to four days' worth, Interfax reported.

A combination of short- and longer-term factors have led to wholesale prices rising close to market prices, the source said, meaning that companies could pass on the burden to drivers.

A FUEL shortage has hit Gulu district, leading to a hike in transport fares. Motorists and boda boda cyclists on Tuesday morning queued at the Caltex station, the only station that had fuel.

Rusty pipes have stopped deliveries of Mobil's unleaded premium petrol, forcing it to buy fuel from other companies to feed the market.

Mobil spokesman Alan Bailey on Thursday confirmed that delivery of unleaded premium petrol was suspended last Thursday after rust was found in piping at its Yarraville terminal

Analysts said the country's creaking infrastructure could mean that it would become a net importer of gasoline within the next few years.

Producing high-quality gasoline is a particular problem, TransCapital Bank analyst Nikolai Klyukin said.

!!!

It appears that Russia is joining the US, Canada, Europe, Venezuela, Aruba, Iran and other countries on the long list of those who are having more difficulty making gasoline from lower quality oil and/or have left their infrastructure rot over the years to save money.

But the question remains - if Russia, Mexicio, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria and some other OPEC countries are looking to increase gasoline imports, who exactly is going to provide the gasoline?

Does anyone know what the heck is going on in Victoria?

Fuel shortage hits Victorian diesel stocks

Quote:
Problems at the Altona refinery of Mobil Australia have crippled stocks of diesel in Victoria.

The refinery supplies not only Mobil customers but also rival BP, leaving many fuel outlets throughout the state without stocks of diesel.

Reports have begun to arrive of petrol stations closing diesel pumps because of a lack of the fuel.

While the exact nature of the problem is unclear, transport operators with on-site tanks say it is nearly a week since they received deliveries of fuel.

There have been several stories about this over the past few days, but no one seems to know what the problem is.

China cut back some oil and oil product imports a month or so ago on the expectation that prices would fall later. Needless to say they were wrong, plus they now have less inventories than they need.

Albania: Blackouts to start again in September

State power monopoly KESH reported recently that the country would suffer long blackout hours in September due to insufficient levels of domestic production and the lower levels of imports, which would not guarantee normal supply.

"We have a deficit of 800 millions KWh and this deficit will be covered by blackouts", a KESH official said.

what an interesting way to phrase it.

BBC: Bolivia

Quote:
Father and son, Pascual and Vidal Arellano grow soy and have more than 200 hectares of land ..... But these days they spend more time at petrol stations than in the fields.... Pascual Arellano says. "I expect to lose 40% of my crop this year."
...
Consecutive governments have spent more than $100m (£50m) a year on fuel subsidies, making Bolivia's diesel the cheapest in South America.

The subsidy helps to people in this country, which is South America's poorest.

But it also gives rise to contraband smuggling, which President Morales blames for the shortages.
.....
In the short term, Bolivia is importing diesel from neighbouring countries and Venezuela, and has militarised border petrol stations to stop diesel leaking out through smuggling.

Crop loss
High subsidies...misuse as a result (in this case smuggling)
Calling in the army.

Again this reflect the problem of policies that encourage fuel use through subsidies, but it also shows how fuel shortages play out and affect the wider society.

Guyana

Quote:
Due to a shortage of fuel at the Guyoil Company at Heathburn, East Bank Berbice since last Wednesday a number of agricultural operations on the Corentyne have been affected.

Gas station owner, David Subnauth told Stabroek News yesterday that he checked at the company and was told that they were out of gasoline, diesel and kerosene. He said the boat that normally distributes fuel to Guyoil is not expected until next Wednesday.

Government will not intervene to stem the ongoing fuel crisis in the country, according to cabinet ministers. The crisis has led to increase of fuel prices at all petrol stations surveyed in the City of Kigali. Kerosene used by most Rwandans for lighting has hit an all time high of Frw570 from the previous Frw480.

This Asian Tiger is running out of gas. How long can China keep its needed growth under these circumstances, not long, I wouldn’t image.

China out of gas

Quote:

The system is suffering from pressure of demand to sustain its economic growth at the current 11.5per cent - with China now the second-biggest consumer of oil after the US.

Diesel imports rose 46.5per cent in the first nine months of the year, compared with the same period last year.

I kept reading these crazy economic statistics coming out of China and wondered when the rubber was going to hit the road w/ regards to oil.

We have not checked up on this for awhile:

Uganda

Quote:
“But the fuel shortage has slowed down the flow of the items because transporters tend to hike prices, affecting retail prices. We have maintained our price but normally, prices should have come down with such improved harvests.”

This situation has been going on since Summer. Also, oil=food

Kenya

Quote:
We have got 6,000 tonnes of raw materials worth $6m (about sh10.2b) at Mombasa, but for the last two weeks, we have not received any raw materials. The only raw material available in Uganda is scrap,” he said in an interview on Tuesday.

“The situation has been aggravated by the fuel shortage that has restricted movement within and outside Uganda, making our sales drop by 30%, while exports have also dropped by 50%.”

We know there were riots in this land just the other day. I imagine six months of a fuel shortage will tick you off. This has been going on since at least July.

Rwanda

Quote:
FOLLOWING the post-election crisis in Kenya that has led to shortage of fuels in neighbouring states, the Rwandan government has sent a team to Tanzania to speed up negotiations for it to access most of her imports through the Dar-es-Salaam port.

Rwanda has been benefiting from Tanzania's proximity to the sea but this trade exchange has been on a low scale.

Bangladesh. Fuel=Fertilizer=Food

Quote:
Fertiliser, fuel and electricity supply: Three challenges: After having a poor harvest (on an average 12-15 percent less) due to fertiliser shortage, farmers of my area are preparing their lands for boro cultivation. Seedlings are ready on the seedbed. Some have started to erect makeshift houses for irrigation pumps. Within a week, they would start preparing their land for transplantation of boro seedlings. But all depended on the availability of fertiliser. The hassle of collecting urea during Aman season is still haunting them. The high price of TSP (Tk 1,400 a 50-kg bag) and MoP (Tk 1,350 a 50 kg bag) is also a headache for the marginal farmers.

Zimbabwe (fuel=fertilizer=food_

Quote:
Top dressing fertiliser, which is critical during this time of the farming season, is now reportedly in short supply.

Agriculture remains the backbone of the country's economy.

Tanzania

Quote:
However,on Monday Mdeza acknowledged that the fuel shortage was made worse because local transporters have not loaded fuel from Dar es Salaam for the past three weeks due to stock taking by Tanzania Revenue Authority at Malawi Cargo Centre (MCC).

Iraq (of course, one of the most fuel rich nations on earth)

Quote:
"I see them feeling cold, so I go out to buy kerosene at any price," Muslih, a 49-year-old city employee told IPS. "My salary cannot pay for kerosene. So I use my savings, or try to avoid other necessities."

This is a problem in home after home in this city of about 300,000 located 40 km north of Baghdad, in the violence and unemployment ridden Diyala province.

I think we get the picture. Fuel=food, this was mentioned specifically in several of these articles, and lack of fuel=chaos.

I did not see Pakistan on here today, but only a matter of time until it shows up again.

Canada, one of the so-called "fuel rich" nations

Quote:
Officials with the shipping company charged with delivering fuel to Inuvik, N.W.T., said they are working with petroleum supplier Imperial Oil to deal with a fuel shortage in the community.

Gas stations and businesses in Inuvik have been ordered to ration fuel as a result of the shortfall, which Imperial Oil blamed on shipping issues with Northern Transportation Company Ltd.

The company, which handles barge shipments to communities in the North, faced numerous delays during its shipping season last summer and was unable to deliver a sufficient fuel supply to the town of 3,500.

Guangdong manufacturers should expect to suffer shortages of electricity, diesel and coal this year as energy supplies fail to keep pace with the province's surging economic growth....
