I think this is the beginnings of an economy based on perpetual growth and fossil fuel energy running headlong into geological energy constraints. Basically I see an undulatory downward path for the rest of my life. From here out, I think any rallies in our economic condition are going to be met with spiking commodity prices that knock us right back down.

Here's my brand-new ecovillage thread!

Who would join my ecovillage? Why? Why not? (be kind)

I would hesitate to do so...and you would probably hesitate to accept me.

You know more about farming and how to feed yourself than I ever will...but would you be prepared to be ruthless to the waves of desperate refugees that might show up? I think those who fit into your village would also have kind hearts.

And how could you ever tolerate someone like me? I think those who believe as you do what not be comfortable around me.

Community politics would be a concern for me. I'm kind of a loner, really. The whole reason I'm a homesteader is that I need to be in control of my life. I'm counting on my neighbours pulling together in a time of crisis. We've been around each other for generations and I'm hoping that will be enough for us to work together.

Specific to your eco-villiage Ludi, it would be the climate that keeps me away. I really like the climate in my area and couldn't imagine living anywhere without 4 distinct seasons. I love a good cold winter to give me a reason to appreciate spring.

One word of advice that I'm sure you've already considered is to somehow get references and police checks on the people you are thinking of inviting.

Thanks for the invitation!

What is the focus of the ecovillage? How big do you plan to get? What makeup is the village intended to encompass (i.e., doctor, herdsman, energy systems technician, communications tech, how many farmers, apothecary, machinist, wheel wright, harness maker, you get the picture).

How will ownership be handled; private property or shares? democratic or representative? What happens if someone becomes intolerable?

How do you plan to protect the village? Etc, etc...

I'll join. What are we going to do? Mail our garden products to each other?

Ludi,

I was planning on creating an eco village myself when the circumstances are right (catch those dang $$$).

I have a location picked out which has everything naturally we need including a wide natural barrier. Its isolated but near a major Australian city in the south. Defendable.

Finding a community that is self sufficent but is also able to maintain its integrity is crucial.

Long term, this is what I wish to do. If circumstances don't allow it I will move around till they do.

With all due respect, and at the risk of over-generalizing, I think that anybody setting out to start an intentional community is probably not somebody I'd want to be neighbors with. Why not be part of the community you're in? Problems with your neighbors? People are hard to get along with, even the ones we (try to) hand pick. The idea of creating little groups of only people we like and approve of is pretty junior-high-ish, and almost always doesn't work, probably because of the egotism inherent in the very idea.

Thanks for the invitation!

I only need to know one thing: how are decisions going to be made? I mean not *in theory* but practically.

I'd join.

Benefits:
Got good grounding in first aid
Work hard
Don't need much 'stuff'
Like sharp knives and tools

Drawbacks:
Really cannot stand 'spiritual' things
have tendancy to lose focus

but like others have said, communities that arise out of necessity will most probably be the winners.

I'm intrigued! Please tell us more about your setup.

I've already got my own place, so I won't personally be joining. I could, however, steal your ideas. Very Happy

i would join if people didn't eat meat, because that would just be a waste of land, water and energy.

thats why vegan food is so cheap(require's very little of everything to produce compared to meat)

Despite the fact that I am a liberal treehugger at heart, I'd only join an ecovillage PRE-bottleneck if said eco-village was surrounded by a large shark-infested moat and the outer parameter was festooned with land mines...and all the inhabitants would need to be armed to the teeth.

And, for the record, I hate guns...

I pretty much think anyone standing still during the panic (and, in my opinion) probable subsequent die-off will be an instant target for governmental takeovers and random opportunists.

Now AFTER the inital phase of madness and utter mindless brutality, belonging to an ecovillage would be one of the only sane and reasonable approaches to take if humanity is to not fall into another protracted dark age.

So, if you survive, save a hut for me...I'll earn my keep. In the meantime, once TSHTF, I'll be keeping a low profile and no fixed location while the Neo-Barbarians are slaughtering each other over the last can of Spam. We'll see if I can survive eating Purslane and Pine Nuts.

The other Ludi (no relation...it's just a stage name...).

Is it really a "Village of Idiots"?

Anybody have some intentional community stories to share?

I would, despite me being a independent minded city guy with no experience in growing food, but I can fix bicycles and maybe brew some beer, and do hard labor. Because I'm a city boy, I don't see how I could ever be (semi) selfsufficient on my own, so joining a village like this might be my only chance in a hypothetical madmax scenario. However, despite me not liking guns either, we would need a minute -"Jack" as townguardsman in such a scenario. And you know what they say about ecovillages, it's all about location, location, location. So where would it be? Some distant place somewhere in the dakota's?
