I don't have any official confirmation of this, but someone posted last night at TOD that Samsam Bakhtiari has passed away. He said he heard the sad news from Mr. Bakhtiari's brother. _________________ "The problems of today will not be solved by the same thinking that produced the problems in the first place." - Albert Einstein |

I predict that some of the tinfoil hat people will say that the assassination order came down to silence him because he blabbed too much about the oil situation. _________________ "There was a time before reason and science when my ancestors believed in all manner of nonsense." Bakhtiari is among my top three favorite analysts: Deffeyes, Campbell and he, among the old-timers.
He brought a palpable dignity to the "doomer" vision: his message was that catastrophic change is coming and we should choose to take it like adults.
He has what I think is the best moment in End of Suburbia:
| Quote: | | "God does set his own limits. I believe he likes to test human kind from time to time. And I think the test is going to come very, very soon." |
Listening to Bakhtiari, one could almost feel good about embracing the change that is to come. This isn't doomerism so much as maturity.
Seeing that he has died, and seeing the newest raft of "skeptical" arguments (actually denialist articles) against peak oil, I grow more convinced that, while the peak oil argument has been won, the peak oil CAUSE is lost.
We're still arguing about WHETHER peak oil is coming. But Bakhtiari notable told us that "the modeling phase is over."
He drew vicious attacks from frothers (who shall remain nameless), I think because his vision was so bracing: We most decidedly could not have our cake and eat it too.
Who is going to fill his shoes?

He had a lot of nerve considering his situation and lack of support among his peers.
It's sad that he only saw the beginning of the PO downslope. I expect he could have become very well known in just a few more years. _________________ It's already over, now it's just a matter of adjusting. |

| That's sad news. I had a lot of respect for Dr. Bakhtiari, and I had hoped to meet him at ASPO-USA 2006 in Boston, where he was invited to speak, but was unable to attend due to visa issues. He was a good man. |

Anybody else thinking: "Lucky bastard. Getting out before it gets rough."? Or just me?
May God rest his soul. He was a good man for the little I knew of him. _________________ I want to put out the fires of Hell, and burn down the rewards of Paradise. They block the way to God. Not to provoke advancedathiest, but I wonder what Bakhtiari meant by this:
| Quote: | | My participation as a guest speaker at 'ASPO' conferences began with the marvelous 'Historical Premiere' at Uppsala University (Sweden) in May 2002, and it all came to a rather bitter end in March 2007 at the Florence Convegno (in Italy) -- from which I was very lucky to get away with my life. |
