Meanwhile, keep watching for shortage reports, because we should start seeing some sneak in this week, if our doom-o-meter is calibrated correctly.

Start a section for survivalists.

Mental preparedness and physical fitness are the foundations of all our survival quests. For the mind guides the body, but an unfit body is not able to respond to the minds guidance.

We become mentally prepared when we are able to use the 7 Skills to defeat the 7 Enemies of Life.

The 7 Skills:

Fire Starting
Water Procurement
Shelter Building
Foraging for food
Signaling
First Aid
Self Defense

7 Enemies of Life:

Fear and anxiety
Cold and Heat
Thirst
Hunger
Boredom and Loneliness
Fatigue
Pain and Injury

In essence, we develop self confidence by mastering the skills needed to overcome any situation that arises to threaten our life.

Take care,

Crap,

If you want to survive, the first rule is sit down, keep quiet and look around.

So, keep quiet till you look around (which you obviously have not).

Then make a suggestion.

hmm i do not see "hungry man with a 9mm" on your list of "enemies of life", a glaring omission

all this survivalist bollox people are trying to pitch here is not only incorrect, but can be downright damaging if one was to find oneself in a true survivalist situation

lmao "signaling" and "foraging for food"?? thats what you do when you get lost hiking, that has nothing to do with survivalism

you want to know what real survivalism is like take a look at congo, somalia, liberia, etc.

real survivalism is gritty stuff, and few people have the stomach for it's realities, id love to see how the average suburban housewife would do armed with your confidence-inspiring list of 7 skills and 7 enemies of life to avoid....

in my humble opinion, survivalism along with peak oil has gone way too mainstream, and alot of people just dont grasp the cold hard reality of the situation that will shortly be upon them, but we have instead reccomendations on what to grow in your garden and other such nonsense

when tshtf, people automatically split into 3 basic groups, the wolves, the shepherds and the sheep, and from then on its all up to how well the shepherds can keep the sheep from getting eaten/killed/raped/beat/etc. and protecting their own hide, so basically your talking about a tribal system of nomadic raiders and on the other hand heavily armed communities which practice some local food production, you belong to one of those 2 groups or you die, but even if you do group up you will still probably die from the incessant warfare thats part of any such tribal system

look at Somalia, as soon as government order broke down warlords stepped in to provide security for the sheep which are helpless without it, on the other hand numerous armed groups formed to survive by robbing/killing/pirating etc. , thats Somalia today, but its a constant bloodbath and will continue to be so, because thats how the system works

keeping efficient, bloodless order requires phenomenal quantities of energy, energy that we have only tapped in the last 200 years, and there are places today where you can see what life is like without that order and without that energy, and it is not pretty

but there are positive sides to everything, and there is a reason that tribalism was used by humans for hundreds of thousands of years, its because it worked, and it worked well
some notables::
1)population control - tribal warfare + infanticide + disease = optimal human population, instantly solving hundreds of problems modern post-industrial society will never correct
2)eugenics - when government fails, nature dictates the rules, and she is a harsh mistress, only the strongest survive, which makes the average person smarter, stronger and more fit, as the failed survivalists are weeded out generation after generation, basically the reverse of what's happening today in most developed countries

honestly i got carried away here, but i hope the point has been brought across so to speak...

You bring up many a good point.

Your post would be most welcome to a survivalist section of this forum if it existed.

While survivalism is a fad of sorts, some information may be better than none.

From the tone of your post you are looking for the most extreme survival situations and everything else is discounted?

The warlords of Somalia are powered with crude oil. Within the US, the warlords may be on bicycles or alcohol powered motorcycles.

I believe a more comparable scenario when TEOTWAK arrives is the wild west than some of these hell holes you have in mind. But a good survivalist is open to adaptation.

As far as the skills I mentioned?

They are basic survival skills and we can go on from there.

For instance, if someone need to signal they may waste time with yelling or waving arms, whereas if they had some basics they would know that reflection is the most long reaching signaling tool.

Foraging?

An important food source for the Indians.

Same with gardens. Why do you discount them?

Urban survival skills may be more appropriate to the mass of Americas citizens....but they will be hard pressed for sustainable food production once their hoards run out.

With country homesteaders, yes they can produce some food, but must deal with desperate urbanites looking for it.

Since there is no section for survivors, then please expound more of your philosophy for surviving the peak oil scenario right here my friend.

One other point; none of us will be ultimate survivors, we all have to die one day. But the successful survivor extends his or her life beyond an earlier death...a death that was caused by ignorance of how to make that life last longer.

Take care,

I think people come to this topic for different reasons.

But we all have the same basic survival instinct in common with one another.

Some of us do a great job surviving catastrophes and some of us cannot even survive a stretch of hot weather and die.

So it takes knowledge, dedication and action to be successful at it.

Remember, knowledge without application is useless.

Of course a few posts later you imply that you have not looked around the preparing for the future area of the forum, proving pops point.

I think if you looked around you would also see plenty of reason to treat him with some respect.

Hopefully you are as adept at listening as you are at telling.

Hi and thanks for your welcome,

Oh, I have looked around. You have much here and I have spent some time, but my time is limited so I do the best I can. So was told about preparation section and have posted their.

BTW, who should I treat with respect that I have been disrespectful to?
